Hello Ridgeline Families- It has been a great week of learning and growing here at RHS! Being a high school principal affords me a front row seat to so many amazing moments that I get to experience with your kids. I wish I could have had that type of experience with my own boys when they were in high school. To be right in the middle of their lives and really get to see and experience what they experience at school, would be pretty cool. That’s why our newsletter is important for parents. Our goal is to provide a glimpse into school life so you can enjoy the experience vicariously. If you’re not connected to our social media platforms you’ll want to do that as well.

Today was a great example of community and culture at Ridgeline. The entire student body and staff gathered together to honor and remember our military men and women who proudly served our country. Veteran’s Day observance is so important-- and our assembly today was powerful and moving. When you actually take time to think about those who have served, still serve, or sacrificed their lives for our freedoms, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by gratitude, sadness, and pride.

When we find ourselves worrying and complaining about every day things that annoy us, it serves as a good reminder for me that most, if not all, of my problems are fairly minor when compared to people willing to put themselves in harm’s way for someone else. Our students in the audience today were great and very respectful. Our honored guests and their families in attendance were so appreciative of our students, almost surprised at how “well behaved” they were. And they were blown away by our band and choir and when our trumpeters closed with Taps, you could’ve heard a pin drop and that lump was heavy in my throat. Today was a moment that I will always remember.

If you have a Sophomore or Junior interested in learning more about the NEWtech Skill Center, they can sign up for a "Welcome Wednesday" visit by filling out this Google form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScyACJ04EoKm6on2DbMveHzEf6RlrtBuGdJ4oGUD_V2CaQfNQ/view.

“Welcome Wednesdays” allow students to learn about the opportunities available at NEWTech. Students select three programs to explore during their selected “Welcome Wednesday”. Your student will spend some time learning about NEWTech and then about 30 minutes in each program, meeting with current students and instructors.

If your student signs up for a "Welcome Wednesday", please have them register for the morning visit, so they can ride our NewTech Bus with current NewTech students. They will need to be at RHS by 7:25, so they can catch bus #38 (route 226). If your student gets registered, please call the attendance line and report that your student is visiting NEWTech for periods 1-3. This will be an excused absence.

*NewTech is a program open to Juniors and Seniors, so current Sophomores can start thinking about this as an option for their Junior year.

Is this “prestigious” summer camp for real?

Greetings, Ridgeline families! Occasionally throughout the year, I encounter questions I anticipate many of you might have. In such instances, I will take the time to briefly answer them here for the benefit of others.

Recently, a parent asked about an unsolicited nomination his student received from a prestigious university, inviting the student to participate in a engineering summer camp. In it, the host organization spoke eloquently to the student’s academic prowess, leaving the impression that the student was in exclusive intellectual company, and the invitation was offered because of it. The invitation also spoke of the potential to earn college credit, with implicit overtones of participation in the camp improving the student’s college admissibility.

While most such invitations are not scams per se, they can be misleading in terms of the benefits they suggest your student will receive. Generally speaking, these summer camps are not experiences that will significantly enhance a student’s college admissibility by simply participating. Nor is the credit-earning potential likely to have a significant impact on a student’s progression to a college degree (if they earn credit that will transfer at all). Unfortunately, the manner in which these programs are marketed tends to play on the egos and emotions of students and parents, attempting to attract them to summer programs that, although potentially fun and interesting, don’t truly offer the benefits suggested and/or implied. Thus, most students and parents will likely best be served to view these summer program invitations for what they are: very expensive summer camp experiences on college campuses.

FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) held it's first Regional competition information meeting on Tuesday during both lunches. Thanks to our officers for bringing pizza and snacks! Our experienced FBLA members spoke about their own competition experiences to get our new members excited to compete in January! The next meeting is after school 2:15 to 3:30 Thursday, November 17th in E202-Mrs. Demarest's room for our members to make a decision about their competition events. Please join us next Thursday if you are interested in learning more about FBLA. We would love to have you!

Ms. Lasz's Spanish 1 students recently practiced their art skills by making a traditional Ecuadorian migajón clay using only two slices of bread and some Elmer’s glue. We did this around Halloween when we learned more about El Día de los Muertos which is celebrated on November 2nd. They were challenged to make their alebrije or spirit animal. It was fun to get our hands messy tap into our creativity while delving into Hispanic culture.

Essie, Ms. Wellington and Mr. Kolenkhov want to make sure you buy your tickets for “You Can’t Take It With You”. Performances are November 17, 18, and 19, and include a matinee on the 19th. See you there!

Mrs. Bergman’s Civics classes created digital posters comparing candidates running for elections in Spokane County and Washington state. We then held a mock election and will compare our student votes to the general election results.

Does your child participate in after school athletics at Ridgeline High School? Is your child experiencing an injury as a result of participation? Ridgeline High School's athletic trainer is more than willing to evaluate their injury, work on a rehab plan, and coordinate with parents/guardians for further medical follow-up when warranted.

Scott Wardian LAT, ATC, is the athletic trainer for Ridgeline High School working with student athletes across all sports and activities, as well as RHS staff. Scott is employed by Providence St. Luke's Medical Center to be the full-time AT for RHS. His supervising physician, and the physician he works most closely with, is Laura Fralich, MD, with Providence Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and while he is employed by Providence, he also works very closely with sports medicine physicians and medical providers from other organizations as well. Scott will work with athletes and parents to have them be seen by providers of their choosing should the need arise. Scott can be reached at the school at 558-3942, if you leave a message, he will get back to you as soon as he is able.
