Meet your 5th Grade MATH Teacher

Hello students and families! I am so excited to be one of your 5th grade teachers this year. I grew up in Wilkesboro, and I attended elementary school here at WES just like you! Fun fact: our classroom was once my classroom when I was in school here! In addition to teaching, I also coach Varsity Women's Soccer Team at Wilkes Central High School.

As a math teacher and coach, I love math and statistics, so here are a few statistics to get to know me:

I graduated from Wilkes Central High School as Valedictorian and went on to continue my education at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to pursue a degree in Chemistry. I soon discovered I had a passion in teaching and transferred to the University of North Carolina Wilmington to complete a degree in Elementary Education with a focus in Mathematics and Technology. I am licensed to teach K-6th Grades and have a NC AIG license. This summer, I completed my Master's in Education; STEM Education with a concentration in Science! I LOVE teaching math and science and showing students how 5th grade builds the foundation for all things math and science in their educational futures!

This is Rosie, my best fur buddy! I adopted her when she was a little baby of two weeks old and bottle fed her until she was old enough to eat kitten food. I had experience training service dogs when I was in college, so I thought, why not a cat?! Rosie knows lots of commands and tricks like sit, stay, up, and anchor. She loves walking outside with me on a leash, swimming (yes, swimming!!!) in a bath or creek, riding in the car, and playing fetch!

Book: Harry Potter series!!! Book 6 is my favorite :)

Food: Chocolate, (But if I could say coffee here, I would!!)

Coffee: Black coffee with a touch of mocha and caramel.. or anything with oat milk :)

Animal: I love them all!

Saturday activity: Going for a jog or playing a game of basketball, soccer, beach volleyball, or pickle ball!

Hobbies: Anything active! I play in a few men's adult basketball leagues in town and love to play a pickup game of anything (soccer, pickleball, volleyball, you name it)! Fun fact: when I was a student at UNC, our Club Women's Basketball team won the National Championship! I also love playing my acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and piano! Fun fact: I help out in the music ministry at my church! I also love photography and have seen some of our WES friends at VBS while taking pictures!

This year will be different for your student as their first year with more than one teacher, but I am confident it will help become responsible leaders and prepare them for middle school! Your student will have daily reading and math homework with some science on occasion. We work hard at school, and this small added bonus at home helps us continue to practice and hone in on our skills to continue to grow, (just like practicing for our favorite sports or hobbies makes us better)! At school, we will use Dreambox to practice our math skills, and your student can log into this at home as well for extra practice. Our expectation is 5 Lessons per week as a minimum. We frequently use Class Dojo to communicate. You will have access to all your students' teachers (myself, Mrs. Sloop, and Mrs. Stone) through your Dojo.

Your student will go to specials/encore and recess with their homeroom class!

I believe open and honest communication is extremely important to the educational success of any student. If you have any questions or concerns at all, please do not hesitate to reach out!

I will post most frequently on Class Dojo, usually about the day-to-day activities of our class and very important events. I will also keep our Smore Newsletter updated as often as needed. This will include a monthly overview of lessons, our class calendar, as well as school-wide special events.

My preferred communication hours are Monday-Friday, from 7:25am-4:00pm. Any messages received outside of those hours will be answered as soon as possible the next school day.

We will have one link to request conferences for the whole 5th grade this year, and this will be found on the Smores and on the back of your student's green folder. This way, you can tell us in one place when the best time, the topic of our meeting, and who you would like to be in your meeting since there are three of us supporting your kiddo now!
