CVU Celebrations
March 8, 2024
Dear CVU Community: Celebrations isn't the typical spot for commentary on budgeting, but it is a space to be authentic, and to say nothing about the result of this week’s vote would be disingenuous, as the outcome will have impacts on our educational programming. From the people I spoke with in our community who voted no, I heard two patterns of response:
"I’m afraid I can’t afford to live here anymore,"
and
"I wanted to send a message to Montpelier that we need to fix our education finance system."
More often than not, those responses were followed by a statement that sounded something like, "but I want you to know I believe in our schools."
Me too. No system is perfect, but I get to see first-hand, daily, the stories of transformation that many do not - stories that start in a myriad of places and end in agency, connection, and celebration as our adolescents mature into young adults who have been cared for and inspired.
And, I also believe people in our community when they share their fears that they can’t afford to live here and that they want to send a message to Montpelier. The problem with sending this message, however, is that the message is being sent through students and our faculty and staff. The numbers we are voting on reflect people: educational programming for our kids and jobs for our educators.
I don’t want to step too far out of my lane. I’m not sure how to create an equitable finance system that works for all Vermont schools. It is my job, however, to be clear about what it means for our community when we vote to change our educational programming. We will make reductions as responsibly as we can. We will continue to be our best for our students. And we will be transparent with you in the ways that CVU will look different next year.
Upcoming Dates
On Friday, March 22, we will host our annual Advisory Conferences with students and caregivers. These conferences are an important time for us to get to you, and to talk with our students about their experiences, goals, and plans. Please be on the look out for an invitation from your student's advisor. Some of these conferences may occur before or after March 22.
3/14 - CVU Blood Drive
3/21 - Spectrum Sleep Out
3/22 - Parent/Student/Advisor Conferences (no regularly scheduled classes)
Student Council Corner
Hello! This is Mira. This week in Student Council we debriefed the Winter Carnival, and brainstormed how Student Council can help organize it next year. One thing I have noticed this year in Student Council, more than in years past, is how we’re debriefing events after they happen: the notes that we take that keep a record of what did and didn’t go well help us when we plan annual events that have the potential to improve every year. Speaking of annual events…this week we prepared more for the annual Blood Drive, stationing people to sign people up at lunch and assigning jobs for the actual day of the drive. Lastly, students broke off from the big group and worked on the upcoming first-ever Cultural Awareness Week.
Student Celebrations
Jonah earned a Celebrations this week when he shared that his cat is named Leonardo DiCatprio. As a fan of all things dad-jokes, this may be the all-time winner.
Students, I promise you that there is some parent and caregiver out there who is searching for one of these lost sport coats from Winter Ball. These things are expensive, y'all! Come find them in the Main Office!
It's not Super Tuesday if we don't have any voters! Thank you, Veronica and Suzie.

From Genevieve Smith: Travis Glock played Le Loto in French 1 and won 3 times!
From Arthur Chiaravalli: Pics from this morning's Inspiration Ceremony
From Lizzie Fox Lausier: The Friday before break, 8 students (Emma Jean Armstrong, Ace Caldwell, Ella Lisle, Sam Moore, Mira Novak, Levi Olsen, Charlotte Tyler, and Karmen Wilbur) participated in a schoolwide recitation competition, Poetry Out Loud, as part of Winter Carnival. Each competitor memorized, dramatized, and performed 2 poems of their choice. Junior Abigail Usher mc'd the event, and faculty members Brad Miller, Molly Tonino and Josh Rooney served as judges. Faculty coordinator Lizzy Fox Lausier served as the accuracy judge, tracking how well each performer replicated their poems word-for-word, and Jess LaPlante tallied scores.
Throughout the performance, audience members engaged in writing prompts and were invited to read their original creations. It was a beautiful display of our student body's creativity!
Two winners were announced: runner-up Karmen Wilbur and school champion Mira Novak! Both students performed at the schoolwide assembly later that day, and Mira went on to perform her pieces in the State semi-finals at the Barre Opera House on March 7th, with fellow CVU participants cheering her on in the audience. Congratulations to Karmen, Mira, and all the students who competed this year!
On Friday afternoon, Fairbanks CORE students faced off in their annual bridge building competition. Thank you to John Bushnell and Sarah Strack for planning this thrilling team event.
From Olaf Verdonk: I recently ran into TWO different former CVU students out in the World doing great things!
Adam Zuchkowski (2020 grad?) is now a senior at UVM studying BioMedical Science and was leading the tour my son was taking of UVM this week! He was an amazing speaker and tour guide, communicating with passion and clarity!
Jason Brown (2007 grad) I met today on a field trip with some students to the Generator MakerSpace! Continuing to do what he did as a Design & Engineering Technology student at CVU....making awesome stuff!
Lillian McClain, Lydia Eshete, Robert Nesbit, Anders Linseisen - Participating in BETA Labs project at Generator MakerSpace on Friday. Working in mixed groups with some students from a couple of schools from across the lake. They are working with BETA engineers to collaboratively solve some real world problems!
For the CVU Girls Hoop team, it only feels right to use group photos to honor their State Championship. The made, stayed, and played as a team for the entire season. You won something much more important than the trophy.
Really, the picture says it all. Our Dance Team is awesome!
Faculty/Staff Celebrations
Thank you to Kari Roberts for being an extraordinarily supportive colleague. Who else would return from a two-year international fellowship and say "yes" to working with a new team, hosting a student teacher, and mentoring a new teacher? Fairbanks is absurdly fortunate to have you as the core of our CORE!
Can you find Rahn Fleming and Rose Meyer in this photo? If so, you've located CVU's Spirit Captains!

March 8 Budget Update
Superintendent Sanchez has provided an update on the development process for a revised budget. Please see this post on the district's blog for the full text of his update. Thank you!
