FVE NEWS
February 2025
Dear Frontier Valley Families,
As we step into February, we’re excited to continue the journey of growth and learning together! The second semester of school brings new opportunities to celebrate achievements, and continue to set personal goals. There are so many things to be proud of, and we have many fun activities planned in the coming months.
We would like to congratulate all of our students that participated in the spelling bee this year. Nolan and Charlie in 5th Grade are our winner and runner up for the spelling bee. Nolan will represent FVE at the district spelling bee! We are also so proud of all of our students that gave their personal best at the bee this year. A special thanks to Ms. Pursley for organizing the spelling bee for our wonderful school.
Our school had several participants in the Battle of the Books this year. We have a few teams that will represent our school in the Douglas County Library battles. They will have the opportunity to compete against other DCSD school teams this month. We would like to thank our parent leads, Jaime Jenkins and Jessi Gaal for making our Battle of the Books at FVE such a huge success. In addition, we would like to thank all of our staff and parent volunteers that helped our readers throughout the Battle of the Books program. Although this is a competition, the true goal of the program is to instill a love of reading. Good luck FVE readers!
Cheerfully,
Kiersten Hall
Frontier Valley Principal
If FVE is on a Delayed Start, breakfast will not be served in the cafeteria as they will be preparing for lunch service. Thank you for your understanding.

STATE ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
During the annual testing window of April 7-April 25, 2025, the Douglas County School District will be required to administer the following state-mandated assessments.
Parents/guardians may excuse their students from testing if they wish to do so by following this process.
CogAT Testing
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As part of the DCSD Universal Screening process and our commitment to equitable identification for gifted programming, DCSD will administer the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 7) Feb. 3rd-13th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. Please see below for specific information based on your child’s current grade.
2nd Grade Universal Screen
As part of this process, ALL students in 2nd grade who have not been identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) in February. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.
If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with more detailed information about this process.
Gifted Identification Referral Testing
If your child is in grades K, 1, 3, 4 and you believe he/she needs evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.
Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked:
Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.
If you have questions regarding the CogAT assessment, please contact:
Elizebeth Simpson - Frontier Valley Gifted and Talented Facilitator - essimpson@dcsdk12.org

Round 2 of open enrollment starts on January 22, 2025. For more information on how to apply for open enrollment, please see the DCSD information HERE. If you have questions for our registrar, you can contact jjohnson11@dcsdk12.org
