ORATIA DISTRICT SCHOOL - NEWSLETTER
Week 5 - Thursday 22 August 2024
MESSAGE FROM MRS GOLDSMITH AND MR MONCUR
Tēnā koutou katoa. Nau mai ki te whānau o te Oratia. Malo e lelei. Zdravo. Talofa lava. Kia orana. Ni hao. Namaste. Kamusta. Greetings Oratia whānau.
At the end of last week, we hosted our Whānau Hui. What an amazing turnout, with very positive feedback about what we are doing here at school, which also aligned with the responses of the recent Whānau survey. Our tamariki performed well, with many proud mums and dads in the room! We are currently working through the feedback of how we can continue to make our school better.
What another busy week it has been here at Oratia School. Our Tuakana team had a very successful ‘Winter Sports Day’ at various venues around West Auckland. We were incredibly proud of the way our students represented the school and demonstrated our values. A big thank you also to all the parents who accompanied, refereed and supported us throughout this day.
This Friday is Mrs Norie Inoue and her two children’s last day with us, as they head back to Japan on Saturday. Yesterday we accompanied Norie out to Lone Kauri School, to share her teachings of Japan with the team out there. We have all become experts at origami folding! We have loved having Norie share about her Japanese culture.
Next week is Week 6, ‘Family Friendly Week’ for our staff which is to acknowledge the hard work and dedication they have for our students. We do not have any staff meetings before or after school, to allow them to head home to their families. This is just one way we can recognize their effort and support their well-being. We like to do this each term in Week 6.
Ko te tumanako ka koa koe ki to wiki kei mua, enjoy your weekend ahead,
Ngā mihi nui, Mrs Goldsmith & Mr Moncur
WINTER SPORTS FESTIVAL
Yesterday Tuakana students attended the Western Zone Winter Sports Day at different venues across Auckland. Our students competed in a number of events including; Hockey, Netball, Football, Rugby and Kiwi Sports. It was a fun day out for the whole senior school. Thanks to all the parents who came along to help out and to our staff who put their time and energy into organizing these types of events for our students. Nice work !

TAYLOR IS LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Past pupil Taylor Moore is leading the way at the West Auckland Resource Centre by using the knowledge she gained at Oratia School, to educate and guide customers directly around recycling and upcycling options. Taylor left Oratia at the end of last year and is clearly impressing customers with her knowledge and passion for recycling. Through her volunteering she is setting a powerful example for her peers and community members by empowering them to make more sustainable choices. You're doing a fantastic job Taylor, keep up the good work !
BE CONSIDERATE AROUND OUR SCHOOL
BE RESPECTFUL OF OUR NEIGHBOURS
A reminder to anyone dropping or collecting their children on Shaw Road to be respectful of the properties that surround our school. We have had reports of vehicles turning around on the grass verges. This is causing damage to the grassed areas which is frustrating for our neighbours who look after these areas. Please be mindful of where you park and please respect our neighbourhood.
THE NED SHOW
We really enjoyed having The NED Show at school last week. Jenifer and Ned promoted a valuable message of 'never give up', 'encourage others' and 'do your best'. Many of our students are having fun developing their yoyo skills and tricks in our NED zone outside of the learning centre at break times. Yoyos are still available for purchase on Kindo with our sale closing on Monday next week.
ORATIA NETBALL 2024
As the Netball season comes to an end, we'd like to thank all of our netball players, coaches and managers for all their hard work this year. We had six teams across all year groups with Year 3/4 submitting three teams. Well done to everyone for turning up every week and playing your hearts out and we hope to see you signing up again next year ! A special thank you to Mrs Robertson for organising the teams this year.
