SSAB Bowling Party & Board Announced
Our Superintendents Student Advisory Board finished the year off with a bowling party. Student had a wonderful time bowling, eating pizza, and playing video games. A great way to conclude a superb year of leadership! Thank you to all of the SSAB students that served on behalf of the TSD this year! We are grateful for your dedication and hard work.
Congratulations to the following SSAB students that have been selected to serve on the SSAB Board next year: Nurayda Albeez - President, Elyse Lazrado - Vice President, Maaz Ali - Secretary, Reah Pawar, Angelina Matti, and Vihaan Gehlaut.
Are you a leader? SSAB Wants You!
Dr. Machesky is looking for motivated incoming 9th and 10th grade students to join our Superintendent Student Advisory Board (SSAB) next year. SSAB students serve as a sounding board for Dr. Machesky on various issues to help better understand student perspectives on important topics facing our students. It's a great opportunity for students to build leadership skills, meet students from all four high schools, and have the chance to have their voices heard at the district level. This is a very hands-on group where attendance and active participation are expected. SSAB students meet monthly, and they are involved in planning the Citywide MLK Jr. Event and Leadership Conference for 8th graders. Apply here. You must submit your grades and a letter of recommendation to Judy Holmes at jholmes@troy.k12.mi.us. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 2.
Troy Benefits From Clean School Bus Program
The TSD will receive two electric-powered buses as part of the Clean School Bus Program, which is providing 100 electric buses across 28 districts in the State of Michigan. This brings the total number of EV buses to 200, out of a fleet of 17,000 statewide. The Program for these first-ever electric buses in Troy is the latest in a nationwide push to eliminate diesel buses that harm the environment and students’ health. Click here to learn more.

Baker Spelling Bee Champ!
Baker Middle School 8th-grader Aryan Khedkar made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee Semifinals once again as one of 16 spellers when the eighth round began. The Bee began with 245 competitors--in the early rounds, Khedkar correctly spelled “nonpareil,” which means having no match or equal; “virescent,” beginning to be green; and “linaloe,” the wood of trees in the genus Bursera that produce aromatic oils. In two vocabulary rounds, he accurately defined “inclement” as rough or stormy weather and “vindicated” as being free from error or guilt. He missed the finals by incorrectly spelling “drusen,” small deposits of material that build up in the eyes. Khedkar previously won the Oakland Schools Scripps Regional Spelling Bee twice to earn spots in the national competition this year and last year. He tied for fifth place in the national bee last year.

Introducing the Red Hawk Retreat!
Alyssa Christensen, Aurora Gignac, Emeryn Pittel, Kaylin Reed, and Isis Revell, recognized the need for a space where students could reset, regulate, and relax during the school day. They envisioned a sensory room accessible to any student in need. Through hard work and determination, they successfully obtained the TFEE Change the World grant to turn their vision into a reality. As of June 3, the Red Hawk Retreat will be available for Athens students to use during 5th and 6th hours. Their goal is to have the room open full time during the 2024-2025 school year.

Troy High Softball/Play for Pete
Troy High’s Varsity Softball team decided to do something to recognize Coach Laura Guzman’s dad, Pete, who passed away in December of 2023 from MDS (a form of blood cancer.) They called it Play for Pete, and the coach was so honored because “My dad always enjoyed watching me play and then coach sports…his favorite thing to do was wear a Hawaiian shirt to games, so I thought what better way to honor the man who loved both his shirts and softball.” Money donated/raised was given to the Cancer Society in honor of the coach’s dad, who plans on doing the same type of event this winter for basketball, and carrying it on during the softball season, as well.
