What's happening at Penngrove??
TK/K: We wrapped up Career week last week, our caterpillars are in their chrysalis’. Thursday we go on a field trip to the Sonoma Garden Park We have camp kinder, teddy bear sleepover and some other fun activities to end the year.
1st Grade: We just finished up our moon unit. We published a book about what we love about ourselves and it should be arriving this week so we can have a publishing party. In math, we have been talking about halves and quarters and talking about attributes of shapes. We finished observing the poult eggs and watching them hatch.
2nd Grade: Second grade is gearing up for our second Market Day on Friday! We have been wrapping up our Ancestor project with presentations on where in the world our families are from. We began Habitat Diorama presentations today. The classes are also writing about their habitats. You can see all of the hard work second graders are putting in at Open House. We have counting down the last days with our annual ABC countdown. We played kickball last week, wrote letters to first graders and today we watched a movie for the letter ‘m’. We have two field trips coming up-walking field trip of Penngrove businesses and a beach day at Doran Beach in two weeks. We are beginning final assessments this week!
3rd Grade: Third grade has been so busy! CAASPP testing has just now come to an end and the students showed such perseverance and determination throughout their first year of testing. We are so proud of their efforts! Students have also been working so hard on a rainforest animal research project. They are writing a research report on their animal and will be presenting to the class in the coming weeks. Our classes have also been enjoying our summer countdown activities each day as we get closer to the end of the school year. We are looking forward to closing the school year with a beach day field trip to Doran beach packed with team building activities and bonding experiences before they’re off to 4th grade.
4th Grade: California History Projects are coming in. Students studied a topic of their choice then recreated the subject. Some examples are: Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Winchester Mystery House, Gold Rush days Etc… Mr. Z’s class had a blast at Fort Ross. There is a Field Trip to Penngrove Park this Friday.
5th Grade: We are getting ready to present Shark Tank projects. Students have been working on their own companies, inventions, apps, and products that they will pitch to a group of sharks. To go along with Shark Tank we have been doing shark studies and learning about different types of sharks. Our novel study of City of Ember is coming to an end. Students are creating self portraits that represent their City of Ember character. We also have our annual vacation week coming up.
6th Grade: 6th grade is ending the year with a bang! We are wrapping up a math unit about surface area, volume, what interest is, and how to tip at a restaurant. We also just wrapped up a play unit where students read a variety of plays, then wrote and performed their own. We have had some fun extras to end the year including an InNOut lunch, sweet treats, and a water slide/foam party! We look forward to ending the year with a trip to cal skate, a trip to the Rio Nido Roadhouse, promotion, and our annual 6th graders vs families and staff softball game.
2023-2024 Honorary Service Award Recipients
Honorary Service Award: Katie Langlois
Ever since the call went out for parent volunteers at lunchtime for supervision, Katie stepped up and is here weekly supervising recess and lunch, and has been a wonderful addition to our yard staff and school community. Katie takes the time to make the students feel valued and cared for.
Honorary Service Award: Katie Musolino
Katie stepped up to help with Run Club when volunteers were needed and has done a superb job of encouraging the children and making running fun! She is dependable and flexible and helps fill in around campus when needed.
Continuing Honorary Service Award: Elizabeth McGaughey
Elizabeth has dedicated many years of service to the Penngrove Elementary School Community through volunteering at events and serving as PTA Secretary, Vice President, and finally, President. Elizabeth has always been a kind listening ear, rooting for Penngrove and helping Penngrove be its best. Elizabeth also volunteers time with the Petaluma Education Foundation, helping all the schools in PCS. Elizabeth’s patience and reliability will be missed at Penngrove, but Petaluma Junior High will be lucky to have the entire McGaughey Family supporting them. We are forever grateful for the time Elizabeth has spent at Penngrove with us and wish her and her family on in their next chapter in the Petaluma City School District.
Very Special Person Award: The Crafted Cup
They are always willing to donate their time to be at events and help us show our appreciation for our teachers and staff. Both Liz and Jeff are always so positive and kind, and serve up our 40+ staff beverages patiently and with a smile when they come to campus.
Very Special Person Award: Monica Goodell
Monica is a consistent and self-starting volunteer. She had the idea and took on the lost and found organization and is always looking for other ways to help out at school whether it’s in the classroom or at other school events.
Very Special Person Award: Roy’s Chicago Dogs
The Roy's Chicago Dogs family has donated countless hours of service to Penngrove Elementary throughout their years here, along with food donations and allowing students to fundraise for jog-a-thon through working with them at the restaurant. The family has always been present at events, lending a helping hand, and supporting our Penngrove community. While their Penngrove student will be moving along after this year, our gratitude will last forever. Thank you for being on our team!
Outstanding Teacher Award: Cassie Alcocer
I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect kindergarten teacher for my son Andre. He is a special kid and Ms. Alcocer has shown so much support, patience, and encouragement to help him succeed. She gets so proud of his growth and improvement, as if he were her own kid. As a parent, nothing is more comforting than knowing your child is spending the day learning from such a kind and wonderful person.
Golden Oak Award: Liz & Josh Erickson
I am honored to recognize Liz & Josh Erickson for their extraordinary contributions to the Penngrove Elementary School community.
For many years, Liz and Josh have been an integral part of our tight-knit community, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the betterment of our school and the happiness of our students. As devoted parents to Mason, a former Panther, and Vivian, a current 6th grader, the Ericksons have continuously shown up and gone above and beyond to support our school in countless ways.
Together, as a family, the Ericksons have exemplified the spirit of volunteerism and community involvement. Their consistent presence at school events, their generous contributions as Jog-a-thon donors year after year, and Liz's numerous turns as Penny McPanther have brought joy and excitement to our students while reinforcing the strong sense of community that defines Penngrove Elementary School.
In addition, Liz served time on the PTA Executive Board and Josh was a staff member that students loved. He also advocated for extra fun Spirit Wear Days like MAR10 Day.
The Ericksons' selflessness, dedication, and unwavering support have undoubtedly made a profound difference in the lives of our students and the overall success of our school community. Their tireless efforts and positive attitude serve as an inspiration to us all.
In recognition of their outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to the Penngrove Elementary School community, I wholeheartedly present Liz and Josh Erickson the Golden Oak Award. Their impact is felt by all who have had the privilege of knowing them, and they truly embody the spirit of what it means to be exemplary members of our community. Congrats guys!
