We hope you enjoyed Veterans Day today. To our Deer Canyon community veterans and all veterans nationwide, thank you for your service, courage, patriotism, and sacrifice!
This week, we celebrated National School Psychology Week and conducted a 3-in-1 emergency drill. Each time we practice our emergency response protocols, we find opportunities to answer questions, make adjustments, and reassure staff and students that safety is a priority at Deer Canyon.
On Tuesday, the DC Equity Committee met with other PUSD elementary school Equity Teams to build connections and share our “why.” Tuesday evening, I hosted “Coffee” with the Principal in the Library. There, we discussed school priorities and commitments, including establishing and communicating a framework for our Positive Behavior Supports and Interventions (PBIS).
Yesterday morning, our PBIS team met once again to continue our important work and prepare for our upcoming all-District meeting in December. Both Wednesday and Thursday, parent volunteers led a craft in recognition of Diwali and students had a blast expressing themselves creatively. Check Instagram for photos! I feel so grateful to work alongside teams of adults so dedicated to supporting and educating students.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES ARE NEXT WEEK (11/13-11/17)! Your student’s teacher is hard at work preparing to host informative parent-teacher conferences. Conferences provide invaluable opportunities to collaborate, share insights, and strengthen the partnerships between our efforts at school and your support at home. Free/Reduced-Price Meal Application Information
Please complete the free/reduced-price meal application! Although school meals are now free to all students, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students at our school who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and our school is at risk of losing much-needed educational funds. Plus, students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on bus transportation, before and after school care, and home internet!
Income qualifications change annually, so a new application is needed every school year. For school year 2023-2024, children from a family of four are eligible if the total gross (pre-tax) household income is less than $4,625 per month, or less than $55,500 per year. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.

Family Movie Night — Dec. 8
Mark your calendars for a special event! Join us on Friday, December 8, for a Deer Canyon movie night.
Our choir will kick off the evening with a few holiday carols, and then we'll enjoy a movie, out on the blacktop, with our new inflatable movie screen.
A taco truck will be selling dinner as part of our DC Dining, and a bake sale will have some treats on hand to enjoy during the film. Stay tuned for more information on a timeline for the evening, as well as information on purchasing tickets.
