Office News
Background checks have to be done in order to go anywhere beyond the office. These take about 2 weeks to process, if you are wanting to come into your students classroom or on a field trip. These also need to be redone each school year.
You can complete the background check HERE!
Please make sure if there is any change to how your student is getting home that you call the office, not just message the teacher. If the teacher is absent the school will not get the message.
If there are any transportation changes please call before 1:30.
Our office hours are 7am - 4pm. If no one answers please leave a message, we check them often throughout the day.
Reminder: Class Parties & Celebrations
Prior arrangements need to be made with the classroom teacher. Snacks for class parties and celebrations must meet the CSF Wellness Policy. If healthy snacks are provided, they should be pre-packaged and store-bought. If students receive balloons or flowers at school, alternate transportation will need to be arranged, as these items cannot be transported on the school bus. Students may distribute invitations to birthday parties outside of school hours if all students within the classroom receive an invitation. CSF Wellness Policy can be found in the office at any elementary school or on the district website.
Eagle of The Month: April
At Suncrest, we have a school wide positive behavior system. Every month we have a different focus such as responsibility, respect, and integrity. Throughout the month, we have different skills that the entire school focuses on and, when students model that behavior, they are rewarded with a Golden Ticket. The ticket is submitted into our weekly drawing where selected students get to pick a prize off of the prize cart.
For the month of April, our focus was empathy and the following students were selected for modeling respectful behaviors throughout the month:
Preschool:
Mrs. Jones: Arianna H.F.- Arianna is kind to others and is always helping her classmates. She is a good friend!
Ms. Freese: Paisleigh S.-Paisleigh shows empathy by asking others if they need help and asking others to play with her.
Kindergarten:
Mrs. Klyczek: Yuriel V.-Yuriel shows empathy in the way that stops and thinks about his words before he speaks them. Yuriel tries to use kind words with his peers because he knows that he does not like it when others use not so kind words to him.

She is able to see their point of view and is always willing to help. Alaynna shows the Eagle Way and treats others they way she would like to be treated.
Miss Wright: Sergio G.I.-Sergio has one of the biggest hearts and demonstrates empathy multiple times a day. If his friends feelings are hurt, he feels it and tries to come up with a solution. He has empathy for his classmates and his teacher.
Miss Gable: Stella G.-Stella is a wonderful leader of showing empathy. Stella shows empathy by always comforting others when they are upset and help them figure out a solution to a problem. She goes above and beyond to include others if they feel left out.

Tips for Creating a Love of Reading With Your Children
Start Early: Introduce it from day one. Reading to your child, even as a newborn, sets the foundation for important language skills.
Be a Role Model: Let your child see you reading. Talk about the books and stories you are reading.
Talk, Talk, Talk: Engage in conversations with your child. Describe everyday activities, ask questions, and explore new words together.
Read Aloud: Read books to your children on a regular basis.
Variety Matters: Expose your child to different types of reading materials—picture books, non-fiction, poetry, magazines, ads, board books, etc
Visit the Library: Libraries are a treasure in the community. Explore them together and borrow books your child finds interesting.
Act Out Stories: Turn reading into playtime. Act out characters, scenes, and plots—it’s both fun and educational.
Ask Questions: While reading, ask open-ended questions. Encourage your child to think critically about the story.
Create a Literacy-Rich Environment: Fill your home with books, magazines, and newspapers. Let reading be part of daily life.
Celebrate Progress: Celebrate small victories. When your child reads a new word or finishes a book, cheer them on!
Be Patient and Enjoy the Journey: Learning to read is a process. Be patient, and make it an enjoyable adventure for both of you.

Kindergarten News
Be on the lookout for a permission slip for our field trip at the end of April. For the first time in five years we are headed to the Columbian Park Zoo! We will begin our Alphabet Countdown on April 16th to countdown the the end of the year! Each day we will highlight a different letter and go more in depth about a topic starting with that letter.
2nd Grade News
We had our second Rock Your School Day on the first of the month. We had such a wonderful time rotating through the solar systems to all the planets. Students got to go to all third grade and second grade rooms in these rotations. We had NASA access badges, moved about inside a spaceship, got to be astronauts in our suits, and try some freeze space ice cream sandwiches.
Second grade finished Iread testing at the beginning of this month. Scores have been sent home. We had one perfect score. We had several students who were close to passing. If students didn’t pass they will take it again in third grade. We have ended the third quarter, and grades have been sent home.
We have celebrated March Madness with our annual rock, paper, scissors tournament. We have individual class champions, and we have an overall second grade winner. Mrs. Paige and Mrs. Claxton celebrated 3.14 as Pi Rate Day with pirate themed learning activities. We had special pirate treats, found gold coins, and learned how to be a proper pirate. Mrs. Claxton celebrated March Madness with a basketball themed day full of making a class bracket, trashketball with three digit addition on wadded up papers shot into a trash can, read about the history of basketball, wrote about how to shoot a basket, and so much more.
In Science and Social Studies we learned about dental health with a visit from nurse Teri to tell us about the importance of brushing and taking care of our teeth, and we did an experiment with elephant toothpaste. We have learned about what makes a hero, heroes in history that made an impact, and women’s history.
In math we finished up our time, money, and three digit addition units. We worked on counting coins, solving word problems with coins, and how to make change. We learned to tell time on an analog clock to the nearest 5 minutes by counting by 5s with the minute hand, whether an activity happens in the a.m. or p.m., and elapsed time. We revisited place value and used it to find the answer to three digit addition problems with and without regrouping.
In reading we found the author’s purpose in a text, and then identified the supporting reasons in the text. We found the main idea and details in fiction and non-fiction multi-paragraph passages.
3rd Grade News
March: March was an important month for third graders! They took the IREAD-3 state assessment for reading. Results have been sent home. Please let your child’s teacher know if you did not receive those. Here’s what else we were up to during the month of March.
Reading: Our third graders practiced several reading skills and strategies. One skill we practiced was comparing our point of view to an author or narrator’s point of view. The students decided if they were able to see the author’s point of view on a topic and then compared and contrasted it to their point of view on the topic. Another skill we practiced was identifying the author’s argument and being able to choose claims from the text that support the argument.
Writing: This month the students read informational texts and then answered text dependent prompts about the texts. We practiced a variety of writing prompts based on each text. This is something that the students will see on the upcoming ILEARN assessment.
Math: March was a month of measurement and data. The students practiced telling time on analog and digital clocks. They also learned how to find elapsed time too. Another skill we learned was using a ruler to measure to the nearest quarter of an inch. These are important life skills for students to know. You could always incorporate these skills into conversations with your child at home.
4th Grade News
We’re learning about the six main types of energy in science, electrical, thermal, sound kinetic, light, and potential. The students have been able to participate in experiments to get hands-on learning about the transfer of energy.
In reading, we are comparing themes, characters, and settings between books. So not only are we analyzing these concepts within a text, we’re looking at similarities and differences between texts.
In writing, we are also comparing and contrasting two texts and responding to these texts with both opinion and explanatory paragraphs.
In math, we are continuing with fractions.Students are being challenged with subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping. We are using computation and fraction tiles to help us understand this difficult topic.
5th
5th grade has wrapped up our 5th Scholastic unit, and will begin the 6th and final unit in April. In math, students are writing and evaluating algebraic expressions. We are spiraling through skills and standards in preparation for ILEARN, including reading and writing, as well as the history of our country up to the Revolutionary War. Spring Break was a much-needed rest, and we are ready to hit it hard these last two months.
ML News
Testing is over and we’re back to our normal schedules! It’s so great to be back with our groups and back to our routine—we always miss them so much during testing.
One thing we’ve been focusing on a lot with our groups is being able to take our thoughts about the books we read and write them down. We notice a lot of times our students have trouble taking the thought that is in their head and putting it down on paper. We’ve practiced a lot saying what we’re thinking out loud and then going right to our desks to write it down. The next step is being able to read it. If we write it, then we have to be able to read it–because it’s OUR thought!
These cute pictures are of my kindergartners. We read a book about food and then we had to talk about what our favorite food was, go back and draw a picture, and also write it down–then we had to share that with the rest of the class—”My favorite food is _____.”
These are things you can practice at home, too! After you’re done reading for your 20 minutes each night, have your child tell you something about that book! Then, have them write it down! The more e practice, the easier it gets!
