Skokie Home Scoop

Dear Families:
It was wonderful to see everyone last week. Conferences provide such a great opportunity to connect and learn about the growth that our students have made and the learning that lies ahead in 5th and 6th grade.
Book Fair
Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Book e-Fair! Here is a Library/Book Fair Data Video put together by Mr. Burleson and Ms. Roel.
November Dimension of Belonging and Monthly Observance
The Dimension of Belonging featured in November is “welcomed” and monthly observances include Native American Heritage Month, Diwali, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving.
November is Native American Heritage Month and the month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Native American Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about tribes, to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges. At Skokie, with our work around the American movement west it is important to reflect and honor Native American Heritage month.
Exploring Skokie
Creative Movement and Dramatics: students have been learning about the requirements of building characters onstage. They have sketched out characters and detailed descriptions of these characters and used this to create physical manifestations of their characters. Students have been improvising scenes in which their characters interact with other characters and must deal with a conflict that has a beginning, middle and end.
Science Olympiad is live on the District Web Store under Washburne Non-Sports. Registration opens at 9am on Tuesday, November 19th.
The Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB) Club at The Skokie School is an exciting new initiative for fifth and sixth graders passionate about reading and creativity. This year, the club will focus on engaging activities catering to its members' interests and talents. Students can curate book collections, design eye-catching displays, create book trailers, and produce vibrant reading posters, to name a few. Additionally, they will participate in book reviews and brainstorming sessions and have a budget to spend on new resources to shape the future of the library's offerings. With guidance from dedicated staff like Mr. Burleson and Mrs. Roel, SLAB aims to foster a love for literature and a sense of community among young readers. The club is free for all students and meets every Thursday morning from 7:30 am-8:15 am in the library, inviting all book enthusiasts to join in on the fun and creativity. These are just some of our ideas, but the real magic comes when the students sit down and dream up ways to use SLAB for good in our school and world! We plan to meet every Thursday except the following dates when school is out of session: (December 26, January 2, February 20, March 27)
