SEPAC is co-hosting an event with the Newton PTOC (Parent Teacher Organization Council), FORJ (Families Organizing for Racial Justice), and ELPAC (English Learners Parent Advisory Council).

The Disrupting Implicit Bias presentation will be held Wednesday, April 26, 7:30-9 p.m. in the Angier Elementary School cafeteria for those who are able to attend in-person and over Zoom:

We'll first hear a presentation from Dr. Tessa Charlesworth, a researcher at Harvard who studies how and why beliefs and attitudes about different social groups can change. Her presentation will provide an overview of bias in society with respect to various social groups and explore what research tells us are the best interventions to shift the biases of a society, organization, and individual. A Q&A and a community discussion will follow.

Both high schools and all 4 middle schools in Newton will once again come together to demonstrate that there is No Place for Hate in Newton. On the south side of the city, students, teachers, and families will assembly together at NSHS Winkler stadium and then march around NSHS. We will end the event with student speakers back at the stadium. This was a terrific event last year with so many individuals showing their support. Please come and join us as we make this a tradition.

The evening of May 4, after the No Place for Hate Walk, we will hold a zoom forum for all Brown MS parents. During the zoom we will share the work we are doing with students around building empathy to help them becoming upstanders when faced with racism, homophobia, antisemitism, anti-Asian sentiment, transphobia, ableism and other -isms.

If you have not had conversations with your child before now about these issues, this is a good place to start. If you already discuss these issues, we value your input as we support one another in helping our children build empathy. The culture of our Brown MS community goes beyond the walls of our school. It is important that we engage collectively with one another in these challenging conversations. We hope to see you there.
