2023 Douglas-Sarpy 4-H Ambassador Program
ELIGIBILTY:
• Youth 14 - 18 years of age on January 1, 2023.
• Enrolled as a Douglas-Sarpy 4-H member.
• Must be an active member of 4-H, either independent or with a club for at least one full year prior to application.
• Up to FIVE 4-H Ambassadors will be selected annually.
• The program has an annual application process with an opportunity to re-apply annually if eligible.

End Of Year Celebration - October 18, 2022
4-Hers and their families are invited to join the 4-H council in celebrating a great year of 4-H events and competitions. The night will include recognition of accomplishments throughout the year, Diamond Clover recipients, Club of Excellence, Volunteer of Excellence, and 4-Her of the Year.
When: Tuesday, October 18, 2022
Where: Sarpy County Fairgrounds
Premium checks will be available to be picked up from 6:00-7:00PM prior to the celebration or 8:00-8:30PM after the ceremony. The celebration will be include a light meal from 6:30-7:00PM. No RSVP needed.

Mechanical Engineering Workshop
When: November 29 from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Where: Nebraska Extension Douglas-Sarpy Central Office, 8015 W Center Rd. Omaha
Cost $15
In this engaging workshop, youth (ages 8 and older) will learn about mechanical engineering and apply skills learned to build cardboard automatas! Cardboard automata is a type of mechanical sculpture made of simple materials. As youth build, they can explore simple machine elements such as cams, levers, and linkages in a playful way. Join us as we bring stories and ideas to life with these cool mechanical sculptures that can be entered into fair!
Feature of the Week
4-H Project Idea - Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship exhibits help participants learn more about starting a business, developing, products, and marketing strategies. Participation in this category will give 4-H'ers experience in the entrepreneurial world. The purpose of entrepreneurship exhibits is to help 4-H'ers prepare for the business world.

4-Hers of the Week - Grant Meister

Exhibitors whose exhibits are selected for State Fair may exhibit vegetables, fruits, flowers or herbs as a substitute from ANY class unless it is designated *The following classes are not eligible for State Fair consideration*. For example, if your State Fair selection was sunflowers, you may substitute Zinnias if you need to.

Recycled Art Workshop - Sign up by Oct. 21
When: November 4, 5:30-7:30 PM
Where: Nebraska Extension Douglas-Sarpy Central Office, 8015 W Center Rd. Omaha
Cost: Dependent on activities chosen. Each station is either $5 or $10
Ages welcome: 6-18

During the workshop, youth will learn about recycling and create their own recycled projects. They will use common materials in creative ways to make a desk organizer, a fabric flower, wall hanging, magazine mosaic, and wreath. There are five stations to choose from. Youth may participate in more than one station, but please don't sign them up for more than three. They have two hours to complete the projects that they then get to take home. Parents/guardians are encouraged to stay during the event to help youth complete the projects. All materials will be provided. To view examples of the projects, visit https://go.unl.edu/recycledart.

Explorers of the Deep 4-H STEM Challenge Workshop

Grades: 3-8
In this engaging workshop, youth (ages 8 and older) will explore this year's 4-H STEM Challenge kit, Explorers of the Deep. There will be 3 activities in which youth will participate in Explorers of the Deep consists of three activities listed below:
- Ocean Robot Test Tank is an activity where youth learn how to “ballast” their ocean robot by adding weights to replicate the sinking and floating behavior of a real ocean robot. They will investigate data collected by ocean robots and learn about the value of ocean exploration.
- Ocean Expedition is a board game where youth navigate their ocean robot around the world while learning key ocean concepts. Topics include aquaculture, climate change, innovation, human impact and the ocean ecosystem.
- Ocean Communicator is an activity in which young people investigate challenges that ocean scientists, engineers and technologists are currently exploring. They design and advocate for innovations and technical solutions that inspire public action.
Winter Maker Day - Open to youth 5-18!

Winter Maker Day
When: Saturday, December 10, 2022 / 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Where: Nebraska Extension Douglas-Sarpy Central Office, 8015 W Center Rd. Omaha
The first annual Maker Day, hosted by our 4-H program, will spark youth’s innovative and entrepreneurial spirit! Youth will choose from three festive maker projects. This event is open to ALL Douglas and Sarpy youth ages 5-18. Youth ages 10 and under will need to bring a helper who is 16 years or older. Bring paint shirt or wear clothes that can get paint on them.

Nebraska Young Artist Awards
The Hixson Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts is now accepting applications for Nebraska Young Artist Awards! This program recognizes high school juniors who demonstrate talent in arts, music, dance, theatre, film, or emerging media. Award recipients are invited to a special campus visit that includes an awards ceremony, activities, career exploration, and networking. Learn more at arts.unl.edu/hlfpa/Nebraska-young-artist-awards.

Clover Kid Club
Parents and children ages 5-7 are invited to be a part of the Douglas-Sarpy 4-H Clover Kid Program.
November's agenda - Learning about Nebraska's unique government (Unicameral) and we will start growing Avocados!

Nebraska 4-H Shooting Sports Certified Leader
Nebraska Association of Fair Managers Scholarship
On Behalf of the Nebraska Association of Fair managers, we would like present the Don and Martha Romeo Scholarship to one qualifying 4-H male and to one qualifying 4-H female who are graduating seniors in the State of Nebraska and who plan to continue with post high school education for the amount of $500 each. The scholarship will be awarded at the annual NAFM convention in January.
The selection of the scholarship recipients will be made by the NAFM Scholarship
Committee whose members will consider the following:
1. Each applicant must have exhibited his/her 4-H projects in a County Fair or at the State Fair within the last four years.
2. Each applicant must hold a 2.5 high school grade point average (based on a 4.0 system). Each applicant must also maintain a 2.5 grade point average for the first semester in college and carry at least 12 credit hours.
3. Each applicant must agree to apply the scholarship funds for tuition or fees at a two or four year college or its equivalent, to be judged by the committee.
4. Each applicant must have demonstrated support for his/her school and community.
5. Each applicant must exhibit during the application process a desire to achieve the goals of which he/she is capable.
6. Financial need will not be considered in the selection process.
7. One male and/or female finalist will be selected by the 4-H award committee in each local Extension Office.
8. Recipients are requested to personally accept the award at the Nebraska Fair Managers Convention.

2023 Youth Leadership Ambassadors App Due Today
Nebraska 4-H is accepting applications for the 2023 Youth Leadership Conference Ambassadors! Ambassadors serve on the planning committee for the 4-H Youth Leadership Conference, which will be held June 16-28 at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp. The Ambassador program is open to all youth ages 14-18, and applicants do not need to be enrolled 4-H members. Applications are due by Friday, October 14. Are you a parent, 4-H leader, horse trainer, or volunteer that would like to be more involved in the 4-H Horse program? Check out the Nebraska 4-H Horse Advisory Committee!
We are looking for passionate and involved people to add to our committee. The Nebraska 4-H Horse Advisory Committee serves as a group of representatives who provide guidance, solicit support, and assist in carrying out program activities in the interest of the 4-H youth development and horse program.
