Mid-Semester 2 Progress Reports

Mid-Semester 2 Progress Reports are now visible in the PowerSchool portal. This is the third of three progress reports students will receive throughout this academic year, prior to a final report card in June.

To view a student progress report from the PowerSchool portal, click on the “Student Reports” option in your navigation menu. “SHS MS2 Progress Report 22-23” will be listed in the Current Published Reports section.

Souhegan Prom 2023

The annual Souhegan Junior/Senior Prom is fast approaching! This year's prom theme is "Twilight Garden". Starting on Monday, April 10, the School Store will be selling prom tickets during Lunch/Advisory and 5th and 6th periods. The price of the tickets is $75, and they will be available until April vacation. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey is a national survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In New Hampshire, YRBS is jointly administered by the Departments of Health & Human Services. The data from the YRBS are used extensively by health departments, schools, and local area agencies to define areas of high health risk and to secure the resources necessary to address any identified health issues. Our district has administered the YRBS since 1995. We will again participate in the YRBS on April 18th in grades 9-12. The survey takes approximately 35 minutes. Results have been instrumental in identifying trends and providing support for students in our community.

The survey is voluntary and completely anonymous. Students can skip questions they don’t want to answer and/or stop at any time. To review the survey please visit YRBS site. If you prefer your child not participate in the survey, please return this form to student services by April 13th.

SAT Makeup Day - April 13

We will administer the school based SAT to juniors who were absent due to illness during the March 22nd testing administration. Students (& parents) who were absent have received an email with the information from Karen Chininis.

Senior Project News

The final Senior Project checkpoint will take place on Thursday, April 20th. At this checkpoint senior project panels will make sure that students have completed their applied pieces, as well as all parts of their projects other than their presentations.

Presentations will take place on May 18 and 19; seniors or parents must notify Senior Project coordinators Kathy Maddock and Ryan Lemieux about possible time conflicts during the presentation days by Friday, April 14.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT SUNRISE CHILDREN'S CENTER

• Volunteer opportunities are available to high school students who are at least 14 years old and have an interest in helping out after Souhegan' s day ends.

• Employment opportunities are available to high school students who are at least 16 years old and have an interest in Early Childhood Educations

What is your role at Souhegan?

Social studies teacher, Team 9A

How long have you been with Souhegan?

This is my first year at Souhegan

What do you love about your job?

I love that my job is different every day, that it's dynamic and requires social, intellectual, creative, and practical skills. I'm also proud to be a role model and mentor for 9th graders making their transition to high school. This is a pivotal time in students' lives, and I am proud and excited to hopefully be a positive part of their journey and development.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of SHS my wife and I try to stay really active. We mountain bike as much as we can during riding season, I play soccer and hockey regularly, I backcountry ski, and I mix in some running and workouts in between. I also like to read, cook, and hang out with our cat, Jeff Gordon.

If you were given one wish what would it be?

The ability to speak all languages and/or play all instruments. That would be so fun!

Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?

"The river flows" or "one day at a time." Both reminders that life is always changing.

The SHS Community Council discussed a proposal this week that would allow for removal of any council member who has missed 5 consecutive meetings. Our next meeting will be Monday, April 10th from 3:00-3:45 pm in the Info Center.

Interact Youth Conference

On March 25th, the Souhegan Interact Club hosted its first ever youth conference. Clubs from all over New Hampshire and Vermont attended to discuss the topic of unity. Guest speakers, such as Henry Harris who works at International Institute of New England (IINE) helping refugees find their way once they arrive in New England, spoke to the different Interact Clubs on ways that they can get involved both locally and at a national level to promote unity.

Finding a theme for the event was challenging because many people involved with planning the event felt that different topics deserved to be highlighted. However, unity seemed to cover many of the ideas people suggested. Stella Lunati, Co-President of the Souhegan Interact Club said, "It is what all people need in times of need. Unity builds community. It shapes how we interact with each other.” It seemed simple, in theory, to bring everyone together to talk about unity, but a statewide conference wasn’t something Souhegan Interact Club was capable of planning on its own.

Planning the conference took months of preparation. Members of Souhegan Interact’s Executive Board worked with members of the Milford Rotary and other Interact Clubs to make it happen. Viet Pham, Souhegan Interact Advisor, when asked about how he thought the execution of the event went, said, "Their [other Interact Clubs] objectives might not line up with yours, and there was a lot of things that you had to work out so that it would mesh, that it would finalize into something that could be successful; and I think that our high school did a good job leading that." Students were able to create an event that was full of meaningful conversations that allowed them to consider new perspectives.

Interact is an international organization. There are branches all over the world who have worked together to create a global community. During the conference, exchange students from the Czech Republic, Brazil and India spoke on a panel about opportunities to learn about and experience cultures in different parts of the world. In small group discussions they talked about how unity is important when coming to new countries and how it helped them find a community within an unfamiliar place.

The conference gave students an opportunity to explore new ideas that they hadn't considered before. They were able to talk to people that they never would have gotten to meet if not for this conference. It also allowed Interact Clubs to grow, by hearing ideas that other schools have done can help to inspire clubs and expand their outreach within their communities at home.

Now that the conference has passed Interact is planning their next fundraiser. Inspired by the success of the conference, the club is now focusing on expanding their outreach within the community. Their next event is a trivia night on April 19th to support Marguerite's Place, an organization that supports women with children becoming independent by offering transitional housing and supportive services. This will be one of their last events of the year, but they are already planning an eventful next year.

Project Graduation

Project Graduation is around the corner and we need parents of 9th, 10th, and 11th grades to chaperone the event! It is going to be Friday, June 2nd with volunteers showing up at 8:00 pm (graduates arrive by 9:00) and ends right after fireworks and clean up at midnight. There is also a dire need for two volunteers to clean up the fireworks mess at the AMS softball field Saturday morning. Come join the fun! Contact Sue McNamara to volunteer at suemcna@comcast.net.
