Principal's Post
Dear Main Elementary Families,
Wow - how is it February already? As we enter the heart of winter, please have your kids continue to dress warmly with a coat, winter hat, and gloves. Recess is an important part of healthy development, so we go outside whenever it’s above 20 degrees and dry enough to play.
You may remember that last year we had a “grit campaign” with two goals. First, to remind students that they can do hard things if they persevere and don’t give up. Second, to build self-confidence and lower anxiety in our kids. It is no secret that anxiety in elementary age students is rising significantly. This article describes the growing trend and supports the type of project we are attempting at Main.
The district has decided that all schools will have the opportunity to participate in a similar campaign this year. Be on the lookout for more information coming soon!
We hope this campaign will engage your family in discussions about perseverance and setting goals. Some students may already have mastered some of the skills they will bring home - that’s great! We hope that those students can demonstrate their grit in other ways. If you feel like these goals are too hard for your child for any reason, please let their teacher know. We want everyone to be working on appropriate skills for their abilities. Just remember - they can do hard things!
Thank you as always for your trust and support. If you have any questions or concerns please call or email.
Jon Webb

Did You Know?
Boredom is the birthplace of creativity. It also fosters tolerance of less-than-ideal experiences; requires us to manage our frustrations and to regulate our emotions when things aren’t going our way. Boredom is also related to elevated levels of self-esteem, creativity, and original thinking. (Musoff, 2022)
Some things you can avoid saying to your child:
Dismissing their feelings: "Just go watch TV."
Immediately providing a solution: "Here, play this video game."
Being overly critical: "You're always bored, why don't you find something to do?"
Some things you can say:
"It sounds like you're looking for something to do, what are you interested in trying?"
"Let's make a list of things you could do and pick one!"
"Do you want to create a fort in the living room or try a new recipe in the kitchen?"
"Sometimes boredom can be a good thing, it means you have time to explore new ideas!"
"How about we go for a walk outside and see what we can discover?"
“Pick a game and we will play it.”

Attendance & Office Information
To report an absence or late arrival, please call the absence line, 937-429-7588 option 1 - or send an email to mainattendance@gocreek.org. Include your child’s name, teacher & reason for the absence or late arrival. Please bring or send in doctor/dentist notes from appointments within 5 school days when your child returns to school.
All parents, guardians, and visitors will need to check in at the security window first before entering the building and to sign students in and out of school. Please have your government issued ID and present this at the check in window. All visitors who will be coming into the main building will need to have their driver's license scanned at the window.
If you receive a missed call from Main, please take a few moments to check your voicemail. Most times there is no emergency, and someone has left you a message. The office does not know where to direct your call if you call back immediately without first checking your message.
When sending notes, lunch money and misc. payments to school, please include your child’s first and last name, the date, and the teacher’s name. For payments, also include what the check/cash is for.
Limit the bringing of items forgotten by students to urgent items. Items must be left on the cart in the vestibule. Stickers are provided to label items with student name and homeroom.
Free Tutoring Opportunity
Tutoring at the Beavercreek Community Library will start September 4 and is held on Wednesdays from 4-7pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm. The tutoring is free to students in grades K-12 and they do NOT have to be Beavercreek students. With that said, it is a drop in style and parents do not need to make an appointment. All of the tutors are either current or retired teachers. Students may bring their own materials, but we also have a plethora of activities for students as well.
