A Note from Mrs. Pitts
Dear RES Families,
Recently our RES Safety Team engaged in a tabletop exercise with members of Homeland Security, central office, and the Rye PD and Fire Departments. We have been planning this for almost a year and the work we did together was a learning experience but also validating, as the systems we had in place to respond and the organizational structures we had in place were impressive to our observers. We ran through a few scenarios, which were unknown to the RES team prior, and tested our Emergency Operations Plan, which is submitted to the state by the principal each year. Below is some information we have put into one place, as educating our FAMILIES about how they can HELP in an emergency is a vital part of the process. We will have copies of these in our lobby as well.
Warmly,
Michelle Pitts

"From the RES Environmental Club -
During the holidays, please remember to...
* Reuse wrapping paper because if you don't, our landfills will get bigger and it could affect your water or food.
* Use reusable bags because it can sometimes help you save money and is better for our environment.
* Compost because it helps the soil and the soil helps the animals.
Thank you for making your holidays environmentally safe."
Thank you!
Lunch in Our Caf
Beginning on December 2, we will allow one family member at a time to have lunch with their child(ren) but this is very optional and we don't want families to feel pressured to attend. This is an occasional event as we do want children to build independence and social skills in the cafeteria, a perfect time for this!
- Email resoffice@sau50.org if you would like to attend with the date/time. It is important to anticipate who will be in the building. We love these opportunities for students and their family members but we will always put safety first.
- Adults must bring their own lunch and can bring lunch for their own child.
- We do have a focus during this time...eating for energy and brain power!
- Family members must meet the child in the cafeteria and leave from the cafeteria.
- Days for family visits are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We do not have lunch visitors on Fridays.
- Lunch times are:
Kindergarten-11:45-12:10
First Grade-12:10-12:35
Second Grade-12:10-12:35
Third Grade- 11:15-11:40
Fourth Grade-11:15-11:40
Community Book Club with RJH!
The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff explores the cultural shifts that have contributed to a rise in anxiety and mental health issues among today’s youth. The authors argue that changes in parenting styles, social media dynamics, and societal attitudes towards safety and emotional well-being have created a generation that is more anxious and less resilient. They offer insights into the implications of these changes and suggest ways to foster greater emotional strength and resilience in young people.
Complete the book over the holidays and join us for two virtual sessions of meaningful conversations and connection as we navigate these crucial issues together!

Week in Review
Shawn Tobey: Civil Engineer
Shawn Tobey, a civil engineer and RES parent, came to speak to our fourth graders about his work to design solar panels across the U.S. Although he has a broad range of skills in engineering, the solar panel projects were engaging for our students, knowing we had just installed them on our own roof! We learned that the solar panels (pictured) could provide energy to the whole city of Portsmouth continuously for 25 years! The fourth graders will be applying the knowledge they learned to create a renewable energy project in Steam with Mrs. Boulay that will also include elements of Spanish taught in world language
Turkey Art
Students have been creating phenomenal art, including creating turkeys with a variety of mediums. The way students were able to express the beauty and the expressions of these animals at such a young age was truly magical.
Dams and Reservoirs
The third-grade classes in STEAM have been learning about the pros and cons of dams. In today's age, students need to understand renewable energy and that we can get that from dams using water flow. Dams also create reservoirs for recreation, water storage, and the prevention of floods. In class, the students learned vocabulary and the pros and cons of dams, and then they built a dam using clay, sticks, rocks, and other natural materials. Along with the learning, we also used Discovery Education to watch various videos on how dams are built, dams around the world, and how dams can sometimes cause natural problems, such as blocking fish migration and failing, which causes floods.
Balloons Over Broadway
For the past five years, third graders have been creating a Macy's Day Parade scene in November out in the hallways for all to see. This is a huge cross-curriculum and community project!
The parade scene kicked off the first week of November when teachers read the picture book, BALLOONS OVER BROADWAY, which highlights the life of the puppeteer, Tony Sarg. Teachers show the class various photos of different balloons in the parade and talk about the history of the parade for the past 100 years. The parade began in 1924 and even though it *should* be the 100th anniversary of the parade, it technically isn't until 2026 because the parade was cancelled for two years during World War II.
The display includes:
-A multiplication city where children design their buildings and then write out the break apart models to a multiplication fact. The children each designed one (sometimes two) balloons that were hung high above the city by string. Each child's picture is cut out and their postures depict what a balloon handler looks like during the parade. Another addition this year is the division words problems that each student typed up. The division word problems were parade themed and had to include a model and equation.
Then, the kindergarteners traveled to the third grade hallway and Mrs. Goss explained how and why we created this project. The kindergartners also created mini parade balloons and read this book.
Lastly, some first grade buddies visited as well. The first grade buddies created a mini parade scene and shared their work with their third grade friends!
