The Cardinal Way
Sharing and Learning at Southport High School
Leading and Learning: BELIEVE
As you know, my father's personal journey has had an amazing impact on my life. But, it all started with people who loved and believed in him. It transformed when teachers took a special interest and believed in his potential. Without people like you in his life, I would not be writing this for you to read today. The silver dollar I carry in my pocket every day is a reminder of belief, and the impact belief can have on someone's life.
As Ted Lasso tells us in a pregame speech, “I’ve been hearing this phrase y’all got over here that I ain’t too crazy about. “It’s the hope that kills you.” Y’all know that? I disagree, you know? I think it’s the lack of hope that comes and gets you. See, I believe in hope. I believe in believe. Now, where I’m from, we got a saying too. A question, actually. “Do you believe in miracles?”
John Hattie also supports this with his meta-study of factors that impact education. The number one factor that impacts schools is Collective Teacher Efficacy. Hattie's definition is "Collective Teacher Efficacy (CTE) is defined as a staff’s shared belief that through their collective action, they can positively influence student outcomes, including those who are disengaged or disadvantaged" (Hattie, 2016).
Our culture is defined by what we believe! Above all else, our impact is driven by how much we BELIEVE IN BELIEVE.
Be a Cardinal; Change Lives; Put a Mission into Motion

Grateful Friday Challenge 🎉
Gooooood Mooooorning CARDINALS! The first week is almost in the books!
We have all come back with a different energy this year as we continue to work and fight our way back. The first few days can be energizing and exhausting simultaneously, and I am sure we are all ready for a weekend to rest.
To keep this momentum, we have to BELIEVE IN BELIEVE. As Ted Lasso tells us in the first episode, “Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, probably doing it wrong.”
Today’s #SHSGFC is an easy one. Print this document, cut out your own BELIEVE sign, and find a prominent place to hang it in your classroom. Or, for the bonus challenge, go tear off a piece of yellow paper from the roll in the copy room and make a larger one to hang above the entrance to your room.
Hang it in a spot just for you or a spot for all to see. We have to BELIEVE IN BELIEVE!
Here’s to believing in you!! With banners flying as we go…
