Welcome to the 2020-21 school year.

Our Superintendent Trevor Greene and the Yakima School District announced that the 2020-21 school year would begin with instruction delivered remotely. This scenario generates many questions, mixed emotions, and concerns. Over the summer, action teams composed of school professionals, parents, and community members came together to develop a remote learning plan that would be best for our students.

At Hoover, our staff has been working on creating a student and family-friendly distance learning model. Distance learning is different from a traditional classroom. In distance learning education, our staff uses technology and programs, such as pre-recorded videos, live- google meets, and Freckle among others to create learning opportunities.

A major change from last spring is an increase in accountability of attendance and academic progress.

Attendance will be taken daily and grades will be determined in a traditional fashion. Our students need to engage with their learning on a daily basis using technology, as well as working independently on planned instruction.

This year, more than ever, parent engagement and communication will be extremely important to help our students be successful. We will be using multiple platforms to provide information and announcements, including Robo-calls, letters home, email, and website. For example, our student schedules have been posted on our website.

We know this will be a challenging year for all. I too have children in the Yakima School District and have experienced firsthand, as both an educator and parent, the difficulties distance learning creates. Our staff at Hoover is prepared for this challenge and we are committed to helping each student succeed during this challenging time.

As the year progresses, we know you will have questions. We will be providing updates. Please keep close communication with our staff. Our teachers have started establishing communication with our students. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and practicing grace. Username: Last-last name + last 5 digits of student ID + @ysd7.org
(For example, if a student’s ID is 1234567, and the last name is Gonzalez-Gomez, the username would be gomez34567@ysd7.org)
