February News:
Hello Meyer Middle School Families!
Last month I introduced you to the book- The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness. I am halfway through the book. This month I would like to share with you the four foundational harms resulting from the shift from play- based childhoods to phone-based childhoods identified through
Jonathan Haidt's research:
- Social Deprivation: Reduced face-to-face interactions lead to weakened social skills and feelings of isolation. Teens who spend more time using social media are more likely to suffer from disorders such as depression and anxiety while teens who spend more time with groups of young people through sports, music and clubs have better mental health.
- Sleep Deprivation: Teens need more sleep than adults (8-9 hours). Excessive screen time, especially before bed, disrupts sleep patterns, leading to insufficient rest. Pre-teens and teens experiencing disturbed or shortened sleep are more likely to become depressed and develop behavioral problems.
- Attention Fragmentation: Constant notifications and multitasking impair the ability to focus and maintain attention.
- Addiction: The compelling nature of digital platforms fosters dependency, making it challenging for children to engage in office activities.
Respectfully,
Mark Chapin

Perseverance
Our character trait of the month for February is perseverance. According to Character Counts, students can demonstrate perseverance by continuing to perform their responsibilities and pursue their goals with vigor and tenacity despite frustrations, mistakes, setbacks, and other obstacles that make their task difficult or seem impossible. Students can demonstrate perseverance by resisting temptations and pressures to give up or quit, choosing instead to persist as long as they are able.
Here is the video we shared with our students this past week exemplifying perseverance. Enjoy the video attached above:
