Salute Veterans - A Hero at Sea: JFK and PT-109

In the middle of World War II, on August 2, 1943, Lt. John F. Kennedy’s motor torpedo boat PT-109 was sunk in the Pacific Theater. Kennedy, clenching a life jacket strap between his teeth to tow one injured crew-member, swam for four hours to lead survivors to a nearby island. This dramatic tale of World War II heroism framed Senator Kennedy’s political narrative as he ran for president in 1960. We will discuss the impact that the PT-109 story had on Kennedy’s life and career, including a special screening of a 1960 campaign commercial hosted by actor Henry Fonda. We will also discuss how other presidential candidates used – or didn’t use – their status as a veteran as part of their political narrative!

Bring your classroom into the 21st Century! Learn how the Fort Worth Library uses LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Core and Expansion Sets for programming. If you have these LEGO kits and don't know where to start, watch this program for ideas, activities, and challenges. By following step-by-step instructions, your students can create robots that use motors as well as color, gyro, and touch sensors to complete a variety of tasks.
Support materials including challenge examples, resources, and pre-/post-assessment will be emailed prior to the program.
Wild Weirdos

Join us as we explore the oddballs of the animal world. Is the okapi half zebra, half giraffe? Is there a mammal that lays eggs like a bird? Have fun uncovering what is what amongst the weirdos. Our interactive program is highlighted by our visits from our live animal ambassadors.

Let's Talk Turkey

This interactive presentation introduces students to fun facts about one of our state's most fabulous birds: THE WILD TURKEY! We will discuss turkey anatomy, habitat, adaptations, and basic needs, as well as the various "calls" or vocalizations that turkeys use to communicate in their environment. Students will listen to an assortment of calls and have the opportunity to take an up-close look at a real Wild Turkey.
The Snow Show

Students investigate the scientific and mathematical intricacies of individual snowflakes while viewing and discussing how American artists have depicted the beauty and wonder of snow and ice. Students also learn to create delicate six-pointed snowflakes.

The Frank N. Bash Visitors Center at McDonald Observatory invite students and their teachers everywhere to celebrate Astronomy Day during this special interactive videoconference program. Students will make live telescope observations of our star the Sun with telescopes equipped with special video cameras and solar filters. During the videoconference, students complete their Student Sheet, and learn about the solar features they’ve seen by watching unique science demonstrations.

The Frank N. Bash Visitors Center at McDonald Observatory invite students and their teachers everywhere to celebrate Astronomy Day during this special videoconference program. During this program, students are given a brief introduction to the UT McDonald Observatory, make live telescope observations of Venus with telescopes equipped with special video cameras, and complete their Student Drawing Sheet. Each student in your classroom should be provided a Student Drawing Sheet and a pencil. By exploring Galileo’s drawings and watching videoconference demonstrations, students discover the reason Venus goes through phases, as well as the current Venus phase.
