On January 16, 1919, Nebraska became the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The Amendment declared it illegal to manufacture, transport, and sell alcoholic beverages in the United States. More than two-thirds of the Senate, two-thirds of the House of Representatives, and three-fourths of the state legislatures now had approved the change. The US would become a dry country. And yet, 14 years later the Amendment was repealed. Americans had changed their minds. This Mini-Q asks why.

In January, 1848, gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. At the time there was no telegraph service connecting California with the East. Word of the discovery took several months to cross the country. When the news did reach the States, and the news was proven to be fact, it launched one of the most exciting movements of people in American history.
