APHS SENIORS JOHNSON & SOLLOHUB NAMED "COMMENDED STUDENTS" FOR NATTIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
APHS is proud to announce seniors Egan Johnson and Eva Sollohub have been named "Commended Students" in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. "Commended Students" are recognized for their exceptional academic promise as demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry.
Congratulations. Egan and Eva, who are pictured with their guidance counselors, David Gildersleeve and Joseph Plantz!

APHS MONITOR SPEAKS TO APHS MILITARY HISTORY CLASS ABOUT SEPT. 11, 2001
On Sept. 18, 2024, Averill Park High School monitor and former first responder Donna Holt was a guest speaker in Mr. Kaedy’s Military History class! Ms. Holt recalled her experience of being dispatched on Sept. 11, 2001 to assist with first responders in New York City following the tragedy, presented personal artifacts on Sept. 12, 2024 from her experience and answered questions from students. Following her presentation, Ms. Holt was gifted a Sept. 11, 2001 challenge coin from Mr. Kaedy and his students.

FIRST PES K-KIDS MEETING
PES K-Kids had their first meeting on Sept. 26, 2024 with advisors Mrs. Anadio, Mrs. Smith & Mrs. Wood. K-Kids is a service club for elementary students led by elementary students. It teaches the value of helping others by taking part in community service projects and club activities.
The Sand Lake Kiwanis Club sponsors the PES K-Kids Club. Our 5th grade K-Kids members learned about the organization, their upcoming year and participated in ice breakers to get to know one another.
MRS. GUYER'S WSL CLASS TACKLES THREE-DIGIT SUBTRACTION
Students in Mrs. Guyer's class at West Sand Lake Elementary School have been busy learning subtraction with three digits and regrouping, working with partners, working on commas in a series, and observing mealworms as they learn about the life cycle of a mealworm!
WARRIORS OF THE WEEK (SEPT. 23, 2024)
Congratulations to Chava Thiell and Carter Dee for being named the Warriors of the Week for the week of Sept. 23, 2024!
Chava – Playing #1 singles won all 3 of her matches in straight sets to help the Warriors go 3-0 last week.
Carter – Scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Troy.

SOCRATIC CIRCLES USED IN MS. GARRISON'S APHS REGENTS ENGLISH CLASS
Students in Ms. Garrison's APHS English 11 Regents class recently demonstrated critical thinking and communication skills in a Socratic Circle, while discussing Chinese Immigration and anti-Chinese Sentiment in the United States to complement the book they are currently reading, Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng.
Socratic Circles allow students to have face-to-face conversations and understand different interpretations when breaking down content.

Mrs. Malenfant’s students at PES recently read and completed graphic organizers about a 20-foot crocodile. To help visualize the size of the crocodile, the class created a life-size image on the floor of the classroom. Students helped mark the length, and places where the feet and mouth would be.

Students, parents and guardians met with APHS faculty and staff with no bells or schedules in front of the main entrance of the high school!

2024-25 SPECTATOR RULES
We would like to remind students who plan to attend athletic contests this season of a few rules:
- There is no re-entry for students.
- Middle School and Elementary School students should be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- There should be no spectators on the playing field at any time, including halftime.
- There should be no spectators playing on the adjacent fields or in the woods at any time.
- No Confetti, colored smoke bombs, electronic megaphones, whistles, etc. at any time. Although confetti and colored smoke bombs are fun, it is very difficult for our dedicated Buildings & Grounds crew to clean the next day.
- Please make sure all garbage is placed in a trash can and not left in the bleachers.
We look forward to a great crowd and a great season. Thank you for your cooperation!
MRS. GUYER'S WSL CLASS CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL ATAXIA DAY
Mrs. Guyer's class at West Sand Lake Elementary School celebrated International Ataxia Day on Sept. 25, 2024 to raise awareness! Ataxia is a neurological sign that indicates a loss of muscle coordination and balance, which can lead to clumsy movements. Students then conducted an experiment with their mealworms as they learn about a mealworm's life cycle.

Congratulations to Grace Kelley and Blake Kilgallon for being named the Warriors of the Week for the week of Sept. 16, 2024!
Grace - In wins over Guilderland and Troy had 27 kills, 19 service points and 17 digs.
Blake - Was 14-17 for 191 yards with 4 touchdown passes in a 41-21 win at Ballston Spa.

MS. WILLOUGHBY'S APHS CLASSES LEARN ABOUT HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Ms. Willoughby's students at Averill Park High School will be learning about Hispanic Heritage Month, when it began, why it began, and how its celebrations have changed over the years. Students will learn why it is celebrated Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 instead of the traditional first of the month to the next first of the month.
Each year Hispanic Heritage Month has a theme. The theme for 2024 is Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together. Students will learn about important individuals from the Hispanic community who have been in the past, or are currently, pioneers of change. Students will then have the opportunity to research individuals that interest them in the following topics: art, music, sports, politics/activism, science, and film. Popular individuals include Individuals include Roberto Clemente, Dolores Huerta, Sylvia Rivera, Sylvia Mendez, César Chávez, Ellen Ochoa, José Ándres, José M. Hernández, Selena and more!

"FAMILY SUMMIT ON FENTANYL"
The New York Division Drug Enforcement Association is hosting a "Family Summit on Fentanyl", a free, family-centric event designed for attendees to learn and listen from families who have been impacted by the opioid crisis, from 3:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy on Oct. 9, 2024.
