DECA/FBLA Chick-fil-A Fundraiser
Olathe South HBCU Tour Committee
Did you know that Olathe South now has a committee that provides any Olathe South student the opportunity to take a trip to an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and University)? The first ever OS HBCU Tour Committee was formed in December of 2023 and has already taken its first group of 28 students on a trip to Lincoln University in April of 2024. This year they are taking a group of 35 students to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Students applied and were selected at the start of this school year and have been busy fundraising for the last few months. All money raised goes directly to the students’ transportation, food, and lodging. Our next big fundraiser will be a fun event for OS students and their families to attend called “Winter Wonder Break”. We will have snacks, drinks, and photos available for purchase. This event will be in the Black Box Theater at OS on December 14th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The cost is $5 per person which includes entry to the event, hot chocolate and popcorn, and a free movie. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Ramshaw (kramshawos@olatheschools.org) for more information.
MyHeartCheck
On Thursday, December 12th, My HeartCheck will be at Pediatric Partners – Olathe office providing their comprehensive heart assessments. This program is operated by highly trained medical professionals and overseen by local pediatric cardiologists. My HeartCheck has tested over 17,000 kids, regularly finding heart conditions that could have gone undetected and caused serious health concerns. Through special arrangements, HeartChecks are being offered to anyone ages 8 to 25 for the special price of only $149, normally $1500.

OPS Expands Naloxone Program at High Schools
Falcon Families,
We wanted you to be aware that our school is expanding our supply of Naloxone (commonly known as NARCAN), a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose and can be safely and easily administered to individuals of all ages. In addition to our nurse’s office, NARCAN will now be stocked next to the AED defibrillator at our school and at our district athletic complexes.
Most opioid overdoses are accidental and can happen anywhere. As you may know, the Drug Enforcement Agency has warned that colorful pills have entered the counterfeit drug market, with the intent of making the pills look like candy. Our school district wants to be prepared for any emergency situation. Emergencies do not always happen during the school day, so having NARCAN near the AED defibrillator would allow for access to this lifesaving medication at any time. Our top priority is and always will be the safety of our students and staff.
Various school staff members have been trained on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid intoxication and how to deliver NARCAN quickly and effectively. If emergency medication, such as NARCAN or Epinephrine is administered, we will call 911 and our district emergency management system will be activated. However, it can be lifesaving if an individual is experiencing an opioid overdose.
While we hope to never use NARCAN, we believe having it available and more accessible in our building is a good addition to the list of lifesaving medications we already carry in case of an emergency.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Go Falcons,
Dr. DeMaree
