News from Nurse Tammy
1/7/22
It seems I can’t get away from talking about Covid-19 but I am hopeful, that day will come soon. As expected, the Omicron variant is spreading quickly through our community. See the latest New Hanover County Report.
The good news is it seems to be a milder form of the virus and therefore the quarantine times have been decreased to 5 days ( remember there was a time it was 14 days). The new earlier return to school also dictates that students wear a well fitting mask at all times ( over their nose and mouth) for the next 5 days. This means they will not be allowed mask breaks at recess or PE.
The bad news is because it is so mild, one might not even think of Covid-19. Some people have only a mild headache or no symptoms at all. This makes keeping our school safe even more challenging for all of us.
Thank you to everyone for keeping students home when ill and getting verification of what the symptoms are.
Thank you to everyone for abiding by the reinstated mask mandate from the Board of Education. So many students this week remembered and modeled great mask wearing. This extra protection will help keep your child in school when Covid-19 comes into their classroom.
Thank you to those who have gotten their students vaccinated for Covid-19. We know that all these together, especially the vaccination, will help put Covid-19 in the rear view mirror. Students who are 2 weeks after their 2nd dose of vaccine will NOT have to quarantine if exposed to Covid-19 unless they are symptomatic.
PLEASE keep your child home and Contact Nurse Tammy If:
Your child has any illness symptom ( headache, sore throat, runny nose, congestion, cough, fever/chills, vomiting/diarrhea, body aches)
You or any member of your household tests positive for Covid-19
The protocols continue to change on when your child is able to return to school. Please make sure you have the most current information prior to sending your child to school.
PLEASE contact Nurse Tammy ASAP if:
Your child was diagnosed with Covid over our Holiday Break so I can accurately track cases of Covid and potentially not have to quarantine your child again should they have a close contact at school.

NEW RESOURCE! Literacy at Home (Digital Children’s Reading Initiative):
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Office of Early Learning is pleased to announce the newest resource to support young readers in North Carolina, “Literacy at Home.” As part of current legislation, Senate Bill 387 directs NC DPI to develop and share a digital children’s reading initiative designed to support the continued growth of North Carolina’s youngest readers. The site is home to easily accessible resources in the foundational areas of reading supported by the science of reading. Developed for each grade level, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, resources are available to support phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language.
