FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,,
Throughout the school year, Edison integrates the culture and accomplishments of diverse groups into our curriculum. During heritage months, we take the opportunity to specifically highlight and celebrate various groups and cultures.
For the next four weeks, our entire district will celebrate Hispanic & Latino Heritage Month, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Americans with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The theme for 2024 is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” which encapsulates the spirit of innovation, resilience, and unity that defines the Hispanic experience.
In addition to classroom activities planned by individual teachers, we will have several school-wide events centered around the theme of Celebrating Hispanic & Latino Heritage:
- Spanish-Speaking Country Project: Each classroom has chosen a different Spanish-speaking country to explore. Students will work on projects that delve into the unique cultures of these nations, resulting in vibrant displays. On October 16th, a Gallery Walk will allow all students to view these creative exhibits and learn more about the diverse Spanish-speaking world.
- Hispanic Heritage Cultural Tables: On October 2nd, cultural tables representing various Hispanic heritages will be set up in La Placita by parents. These displays will feature an array of crafts, costumes, art, and music, providing an immersive experience for our students. If you would like to participate, please contact our Community Liaison, Jessica Hernandez, at jhernandez@smmsud.org.
- Assembly: Brazilian Ballet Folklórico: On October 23rd, we will host a performance by the Brazilian Ballet Folklórico. This spectacular assembly will offer students a glimpse into the rich cultural traditions of Brazil, showcasing a different but equally fascinating aspect of Hispanic heritage.
We look forward to a month filled with learning and celebration, highlighting the vibrant cultures that enrich our community.
Warm regards,
Directora Ipiña
SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thank you for a fantastic Book Fair!
A huge thank you to everyone who made our Fall Book Fair a success! From setting up, volunteering at the shifts, to taking everything down, and restoring our ilbrary to it's original condition - it was a huge effort and couldn't have happened without the many hands that made it work. We also appreciate all of the families who visited and supported the literacy dreams of their children. We are so proud to have had such wonderful choices of books in both languages. Read on!
Wednesday Parent Meetings
Each Wednesday, from 8:30-10:00 am, we have parent meetings in the Library. All parents are invited. Meetings are bilingual and there is a Zoom option at this link (although in person attendance is recommended). The meeting types are as follows:
1st Wednesday: Coffee with the Principal and Experts
2nd Wednesday: English Learner Advisory Council
3rd Wednesday: PTA General Meeting
4th Wednesday: Parent Cafecito
This upcoming week we will be hosting our first PTA General Meeting. They will be discussing plans for the year including the budget and how to get involved.
Parent Access to Test Results
STAR TESTING IS NOW COMPLETE. Parents can access score reports for STAR, as well as CAASPP and ELPAC in the Aeries Parent Portal. Hard copy score reports are not mailed home. This video explains how to access the portals: Parent Portal. Here is a guide for parents on how to locate Test Scores and State Test Scores Reports: Parent Portal: Test Scores [Aeries]-attachment.
Remember that STAR scores are based on national percentile rankings. The 50%tile is average. Scores above 50 that are above average, scores below 50 are below average. These scores and more about your child's achievement will be discussed during Parent Teacher Conferences at the beginning of November.
Looking for a dance teacher for grades 1-3
Do you know of a fun energetic dance teacher who works well with kids? We have funding through Proposition 28 to hire a dance teacher to provide a 10 week dance unit to our 1st-3rd grade students during their PE block (our 4th and 5th graders already get a dance unit from SMC). We would love to give our students the opportunity to move and groove to music and learn a fun age appropriate choreography with their entire grade level. They will perform the choreography for the parents at the end of the 10 weeks! If you know a fun, energetic dance teacher that works well with kids, contact Directora Ipiña (eipina@smmusd.org).
Fill Out the Free and Reduced Lunch Application by Oct 4th
VERY IMPORTANT!
Even though food is free at school, we need all families who think they may qualify to fill out the free and reduced lunch application in order to determine if our school will receive Federal funding under Title I. Last school year we did not get enough applicants and we missed out on $200,000 to spend at Edison. In addition to helping the school, families who qualify will get access to scholarships and special opportunities. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY OCTOBER 4.
