MLC Weekly News and Notes 2024-25
October 28-November 1
Hello, MLC Community! I cannot believe we are already finishing up Quarter 1! This year is sure flying by. This week we also end the quarter Thursday with our annual Falloween celebration! This year - we are fortunate that this event actually falls on Halloween. On that - there are costume rules and details below for all of our students.
FALLOWEEN & COSTUME DETAILS:
We’ve been celebrating this beloved tradition for many years and we’re always working hard to keep it fun and inclusive for all. This year we’ll be celebrating on Halloween - Friday, October 31! Students are invited to wear costumes to school on that day to school.
Costume Guidelines:
Be sure that your child's costume is functional for school--they need to be able to see, move freely and participate in all of our activities - no masks!
Costumes should not be overly scary, gruesome, or gory--remember we have a wide range of ages in our community. Our youngest students can be easily frightened even by make-believe.
Remember costume/play weapons are not allowed at school even as accessories!
Make sure that your child's costume is culturally sensitive. Halloween costumes are designed for fun, but some costumes reinforce limited and/or hurtful ways of thinking about people or perpetuate stereotypes of someone’s culture, gender, heritage, or religion.
Check out this great campaign, “We’re a Culture , Not a Costume,” initiated by some students at Ohio University. There is great food for thought as you and your child are considering costume ideas. Their posters can be viewed here:

*** Please let your children know (and we will as well!) that it is absolutely ok to not dress up! There are many reasons why a child may not want to dress in costume. Please let us know if your child needs to borrow a costume by reaching out to Clement (clwilson@pps.net ).
Enjoy your FOUR day weekend!
Warmly,
Suezann & Darren

SCHOOL UPDATES AND NEWS
9x12 Civic's Class Voters' Guide - COMING SOON!!
Hello MLC families!
If you haven't voted already, hold steady but get ready because early next week MLC's High School Civics class will be releasing to our community a set of digital Voters' Guides that may help you in your momentous decision making. These guides are focused on explaining the changes in our local government and sifting through the many many candidates for Portland Mayor and City Council. Students have interviewed and researched candidates these last few weeks and are eager to share their endorsements with you. So, sit on those ballots just a little longer and keep your eyes peeled so you can make sure you got it right ;)
Thank you,
MLC Civics Students & Chris
It's OBOB TIME!
Do you love reading? Do you like competing with a team? Oregon Battle of the Books might be just the thing for you!
Teams of 4-5 kids work together to read all the books on a preselected list. Each student will need to read (or listen to) between 4-6 books. The team will study together to learn everything they can about each book. Then it's time to compete! A battle consists of 16 questions, 8 for each team. The team with the most points wins! The winning team from MLC will get to compete in regionals in March.
Teams are formed in the 3x5 group and the 6x8 group (9x12 is available if there is interest). You may form your own team or if you want help let Molly know. Each team will need an adult to coach. Once you have a team formed, come to the library to get registration forms.
If you want to know more check out the OBOB website or email Molly in the library (msoloway@pps.net). OBOB is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.
6x12 STARS Athletics through MPG!
Did you know that 6x12 MLC students can play sport through the Multiple Pathways to Graduation League?
Multiple Pathways Athletics' mission is to create a co-ed environment for student-athletes to showcase their talents. The students who are included in our pilot program are provided opportunities for organized sports. The MPG Athletics' main goal is to create an inclusive, yet, competitive space for athletes. The program's emphasis supplements the student's academic success by providing ample opportunities to build a well-rounded individual.
Here is our website.
We're currently in the volleyball season, with all games being held at Beaumont Middle School. We're still looking for more players to join the team! For the Winter season, we will offer Basketball, and in the Spring, we will have Soccer, Flag Football, Track & Field, and Esports. All of our sports are entry-level and coed serving students from grades 6x12.
Please let me know if you are interested!

Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy
Cell Phones are not allowed in MLC classrooms or anywhere else during class time. They will be locked in a safe zone during each class by the classroom teacher. We will be very vigilant in keeping our classrooms phone free at MLC in order to keep learning distraction free. Please make sure you are discussing with your student prior to the first day. We will have students and parent/guardian sign a no cell phone agreement at conferences for grades 6x12.
PTSA News
SAVE THE DATE: Craft Faire! Tuesday, December 10, 3:30-5:30pm
Calling all student and professional crafters! The MLC Craft Faire is a treasured MLC tradition and a great opportunity to purchase gifts and goodies just in time for the holidays! Selling their own art and crafty wares helps students learn what it takes to create and make a profit from their creativity. We also welcome artist parents or community members. Tables are free for students and open to non-students with a $20 donation to the PTSA. Start working on your creations and stay tuned for more information and vendor registration. If you don’t plan to be a vendor, be sure to save the date for shopping and celebrating the creativity of our MLC community!
SAVE THE DATE: Restaurant Dine Out Night! Tuesday, December 10, 5:00pm-close
We’re holding restaurant “dine for dollars” type fundraising events this year and we’re especially excited to partner with our neighborhood McMenamins Blue Moon on the day of our Craft Faire! As part of their Friends & Family program, McMenamins will donate 50% of Blue Moon’s evening sales (dine in only) to our PTSA. More than a fundraiser, it’s an opportunity to come together and connect with friends. We hope to see many of you after the Craft Faire, after you pick kids up from KCLC, or whenever you can swing by for dinner!
AUCTION COORDINATING COMMITTEE: Join the team!
We are assembling our annual Auction Coordinating Committee and are on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers with a diverse range of skills. Whether you're a master event planner, a creative mind, a data entry whiz, or someone who just loves bringing people together, we want YOU on our team! Are you feeling intrigued but uncertain if this is the right opportunity for you? You can learn more about the auction and our Auction Coordinating Committee on our website and all about last year's "Grow Together: MLC Community Event & Auction" HERE. Please email Auction Chair Sierra for more information and/or to join the team!
MEMBERSHIP & VOLUNTEER DRIVE: Sign up by 10/31 and be entered into a drawing to win a prize!
Everyone who joins or renews their PTSA membership and/or who fills out our Volunteer Opportunities Interest Form by the end of October will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 gift card to Shake Shack! To learn more about MLC and the PTSA, check out our annual MLC Family Guide. We also encourage you to sign up for our distribution list by going to the PTSA website and entering your email where indicated at the bottom of the page.
Membership- With schools facing challenges like shrinking budgets and lack of educational equity, the PTSA’s role is more important than ever as we work to foster connections and support critical school needs. Join us to grow your village and advocate for our students and community! To become a voting member for only $12 annually, sign up or renew your MLC PTSA Membership HERE.
Volunteer- Support from families is vital to ensuring the MLC magic we’ve come to know and love can continue! There are numerous opportunities to get involved such as volunteering at cherished MLC events, assisting with PTSA fundraising efforts, helping show appreciation to our staff, or having your business collaborate with us on a mutually beneficial partnership. Participation in PTSA can involve as much or as little time as you have to offer. ALL are welcome. Please fill out the 2024-25 MLC PTSA Volunteer Opportunities Interest Form to learn more about how you can become involved.
PARKING FUNDRAISER: Sign up for a shift before the season ends!
The MLC PTSA hosts parking in our school lots for Timbers and Thorns weekend matches and there is just ONE match left in the regular season (fingers crossed for a Timbers playoff match at home) so join us on Friday, November 1, and help us end this parking season on a high note! This is an easy and fun way to raise money for our school. Shifts are short and we will be there to teach you everything you need to know. Sign up for a shift HERE. Questions? Contact our coordinators, Tammy or Chenney.
ONGOING FUNDRAISER: BottleDrop
BottleDrop is the most convenient way to recycle your Oregon beverage containers and an easy way for you to help fundraise for our school! Grab one of the MLC labeled BottleDrop blue bags from the front office at MLC, other bins around school, or from a volunteer and then collect your redeemable containers and drop them off at one of the BottleDrop bag collection points. Contact our coordinator Adam with questions.
