Fridley High School Newsletter
September 2024
A Word from Leadership
Dear Fridley families, scholars and community,
We are excited to welcome everyone back for another amazing school year! Our recent open house block party was a fantastic opportunity to connect with our community and celebrate the start of the year. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and meet new families as well.
This year, we are proud to emphasize our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) school wide system. AVID emphasizes WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading) strategies in all classrooms to enhance our scholars success and college and career readiness. Our 9th and 10th grade scholars will have a special emphasis on utilizing binders and planners to help them continue to reach their college and career readiness goals. All 9th and 10th grade students are required to have a binder and planner this year. They can still be purchased on the Infinite Campus School Store. Our 11th and 12th grade scholars will also focus on organization as they continue their educational journey and begin taking our higher level courses.
Please note that high school scholars will have a new cell phone plan/procedure in place to ensure a focused learning environment. Details of that plan have been shared in our newsletters and forms.
We warmly welcome our incoming 9th and 12th graders tomorrow September 3rd, 2024 and are thrilled to have all grades (9th through 12th graders) starting school on Wednesday, September 4th. School starts at 8:10am and ends at 3pm.
Let’s make this year one of growth, learning and community.
Go Tigers!
Fridley High School Administration,

Class of 2025 - Senior Credit Update & Senior Checklist:
The deans will mail out credit check letters to graduating seniors in the fall. These letters will inform families of how many credits their student has and if an action plan is needed for credit recovery. Along with this letter, we will include a checklist of items to complete and watch for during the student’s senior year.
Class Meetings
The deans will be meeting with students during grade-level class meetings. These meetings will take place during advisory during the month of September and possibly early October. There is very important information shared with students during these meetings. We will also share information on grade-level Google Classrooms. All students should be in a grade-level Google Classroom.
Reminders for PSEO students
Students who are full-time or part-time PSEO students must send their dean a copy of their college classes. PSEO students are also required to check their @isd14 email throughout the course of the school year. PSEO students are allowed to work at the high school; all PSEO students must work in the high school media center. They cannot work in other office spaces, classrooms, or common areas. If there are questions please contact your student’s dean.
Schedules for 1st Semester
When students request courses during the registration process in February, they agree to pursue the chosen courses to completion. Since schedule changes have a serious impact on class sizes, teacher assignments and the overall master schedule, they need to be kept to a minimum. Please use the following list below as a guide to whether or not a student needs a schedule change:
- The student does not have the prerequisite(s)
- The student failed the class in a previous year (grade 9, 10, 11)
- There is an obvious error (two classes at the same time)
- To add a class that is needed to graduate
- The schedule is unbalanced (a course is missing)
Schedule changes will NOT be made for:
- Request a specific teacher
- Request a specific trimester
- Change lunch periods
- Have a class with a friend
- Leave to attend non-school sanctioned occupational activity
We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
ACT Exams
Fridley High School will NOT offer the ACT this fall. Stay tuned for more information as we offer the ACT later in the spring. Students are always welcome to take the ACT outside of the assigned district testing day. The ACT test does have a fee ranging from $60-$70. Fee waivers are available in the SSS office for students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Please see your dean with questions.
Upcoming ACT tests/registration deadlines:
Test: October 26 Deadline: September 20
Test: December 14 Deadline: November 8
Fridley High School will offer a free ACT test to all 11th graders on April 7th, 2025.
Credit Recovery
If your student is missing required credits, it is very important that they make a plan to make up these credits with their dean. After-school credit recovery will start in the fall. If a student is missing many required credits, the dean might recommend enrolling at the Fridley ALC. If you have questions about credit recovery or the ALC, please contact your student’s dean. More information about credit recovery will be sent home with students who need it.
Meet Your Therapist
FHS partners with Lee Carlson Center to have a School Linked Mental Health therapist working in the school. Therapy sessions take place at FHS, during the school day so kids do not have to travel for services. Any student with emotional or behavioral needs can be served by our SLMH therapist. Students do not need to receive special education services to use this program. Most insurance plans are accepted and a sliding fee is available for those who qualify.

Cell Phone Practices
Fridley High School values the importance of technology in education while also fostering a safe and focused learning environment. This agreement outlines the guidelines for appropriate cell phone use on school premises. We aim to strike a balance between utilizing technology for educational purposes and maintaining respectful interpersonal interactions. Cell phones will not be permitted in classrooms this year.. Cell phones will be permitted before and after school, during passing time and at lunch for all students.
Agreement Guidelines:
Before and After School: All students are permitted to use their cell phone before and after school hours, which takes place prior to 8:10 a.m. and after 3 p.m. During this time, students are allowed to use their cell phones for personal communication, entertainment, and educational purposes.
Passing Time: All students are permitted to use their cell phone during passing time between classes. Students are expected to be mindful of their surroundings and avoid disrupting the flow of foot traffic in hallways. In consideration of safety, any form of video or audio playback with loud volume is to be avoided.
Lunch Period: All students are permitted to use their cell phone during their designated lunch period. Students may use their cell phones to communicate with friends, engage in leisure activities, or access educational resources. Courteous behavior is expected, and students should avoid disturbing others during this time.
Guidelines for Responsible Cell phone Use:
Respect for Learning Time: All students' cell phones must be turned off or set to silent mode during class hours to prevent distractions and maintain a focused learning environment.
Privacy and Consent: Students are expected to respect the privacy of others and obtain consent before taking photos, videos, or recordings. Sharing or distributing such content without permission is strictly prohibited.
Cyberbullying and Harassment: Any form of cyberbullying, harassment, or inappropriate online behavior is strictly prohibited.
Content Restrictions: Students must adhere to age-appropriate content guidelines while using their cell phones on school premises. Accessing or sharing explicit, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content is not allowed.
Responsibility for Devices: Students are responsible for the safety and security of their own devices. The school is not liable for any loss, theft, or damage to personal cell phones.
Consequences for Violation: Violations of this agreement may result in progressive consequences, including warnings, temporary confiscation of devices, and/or parental involvement, depending on the severity and frequency of the infraction.
Conclusion: We believe that responsible cell phone usage can enhance the educational experience while promoting respectful interactions among students. By adhering to this agreement, students contribute to a positive and conducive learning environment. This agreement is subject to periodic review and revision to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with the school's goals.
