Brimhall Buzz for February 9, 2024
News for February 9, 2024
Brimhall Families,
We are full steam ahead with our annual Read-a-Thon! It is one of my favorite school events because of how seriously our learners take their reading. Whether it is time to drop everything and read (DEAR) at a moment’s notice or report all the minutes they read at home, students take such pride in seeing their minutes add up.
The reward for reaching one-million minutes of reading during February is a hot topic among our learners. Last year I had to sleep on the roof because of the school reaching our reading goal. This year, our Read-a-Thon committee selected three things that students could vote on as their one-million minute reward:
I get slimed at an all school meeting
Students cover me in silly string
I have to dress up as a clown and deliver a treat to each classroom
We won’t know the results yet, but I am quite certain that my campaign for the silly string option will fall far short of winning this vote! Regardless, it is a fun time to read and celebrate all our learners.
We continued our Kindness 101 work into February with an overall theme of friendship. On Wednesday we watched a video (linked here) about a man who has made countless new friends by supporting them at a cancer treatment clinic through a shared love of coffee. It is a heartwarming story of kindness and friendship. Here are the circle prompts we used so you can keep the conversation going at home:
When I meet new people, I usually…
Has a friend ever done anything especially kind for you? What was it? How did you feel?
Have you ever done something kind for a new or old friend? How did you feel?
Thank you,
Ryan Vernosh
Principal

Vision Screening
Students had their vision screened at the school this week in accordance with MDH guidelines. The screening was performed by the school nurse using a photo screener. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the nurse (contact information below). If the screening was passed with no concerns, you will not hear back about the results. If the screening shows that a comprehensive eye exam is recommended, the results and the recommendation will be sent home with the student.
If finances are a barrier to obtaining an eye exam and/or glasses, please contact the school nurse for resources. If you have concerns about your child's vision and do not receive a follow up letter, please contact the nurse and results can be provided.
A school-wide hearing screening will not be performed. The school nurse can perform a hearing screening for your student at any time upon request.
