Cultural Highlights For The Week
Memorial Day
Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2023 will occur on Monday, May 29.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
Pride Month- June
June 1st marks the beginning of PRIDE Month. Pride Month was initially inspired by the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, and works to achieve equal justice and opportunity for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, queer/questioning) Americans. The purpose of the month is to recognize the impact that LGBTQ individuals have had on society locally, nationally and internationally. Although Pride Month has been celebrated for more than 50 years, President Bill Clinton officially declared June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month in 2000. President Barack Obama expanded the observance in 2011 to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month.
While we celebrate Pride Month in June, October is LGBT History Month. It was established in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, a high school history teacher in Missouri. In 1995, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the National Education Association included LGBT History Month within a list of commemorative months. October was selected to coincide with the anniversary of the first march on Washington for gay and lesbian rights in 1979 and National Coming Out Day which is October 11th.
Juneteenth- June 19th
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond. Today Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.

Virtual Enrichment Summer Opportunity- Registration is Open
To promote continuous learning over the summer, NPSD will be offering a summer enrichment opportunity for all elementary students who have completed grades K-6 in the 2022-2023 school year. This free virtual program is designed to be completed asynchronously, with the engagement of families. Our goal is to provide independent, engaging activities throughout the summer that are the perfect blend of academics and fun in order to best support continued growth for our students.
The program will offer four weeks of content starting on Monday July 3rd. New content will be posted every Monday. Registration will be required, and a link will be posted for families by May 15th to register their child. All information will also be posted to the NPSD website, and promoted through social media outlets. While the information is not posted yet, we want you to be able to promote it while sharing summer ideas and talking to your families. Please remember, this is different from SPARK, which is our in-person summer remediation program, and students must be invited to participate in that program.
Once the program begins, students will have access to four weeks of themed choice menus with activities that are aligned to grade level standards in ELA and Math, and will also incorporate movement, creativity, and more! Students will also have the opportunity to work through their personalized learning pathway on iReady for math and Freckle for ELA.

Smart Watch/ Cell Phone Reminder
We have seen a growing number of students using electronic devices and sending/receiving text messages throughout the day, which has disrupted the learning environment. Please note, cell phones should be in silent mode or turned off and stored in bookbags throughout the day. Smartwatches should not be used to make calls, send messages, or take photos/videos during the school day. Also, note the school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal electronic devices. Our school team will be reminding our students of these expectations regarding personal devices.
We thank all of our families for their continued support and cooperation in limiting disruptions to the classroom.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
