AVID Field Trip
Our AVID students recently visited Bremer Bank for a day of fun and information. The trip offered students a firsthand look at the working world and introduced them to professionals eager to share their career journeys. The visit began with Bremer staff sharing their personal career stories, highlighting the different paths taken. Students then broke into small groups to discuss practical topics like soft skills, what makes a strong resume, and how to approach challenges in the workplace. These sessions let students ask questions and get advice they can use as they prepare for their careers.
Bremer Bank provided a great lunch of pizza and salad from Davanni’s where our hosts sat with students for casual conversations about everything from career goals to hobbies. These relaxed discussions helped students connect with professionals on a personal level. Our visit wrapped up with a quick tour of the office space, giving everyone a behind-the-scenes peek at the work environment. We’re incredibly thankful to Bremer Bank for hosting us and Junior Achievement for making it happen. Thank you for helping mentor these amazing students!!

State Testing Information: ACCESS, ACT, SEALS
ACCESS Test for EL Students
State and federal laws require that all English Learner (EL) students are assessed yearly to measure their English reading, writing, listening and speaking progress.
Minnesota uses the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs test as its annual assessment. EL students who receive special education services and who meet certain guidelines may take the WIDA Alternate ACCESS test instead.
These tests are used to see if students meet the WIDA English Language Development Standards and if a student is ready to exit from SPPS’s EL program.
All SPPS EL students in grades K-12 will be given the ACCESS for ELLs or WIDA Alternate ACCESS tests between January 27 - March 21, 2025.
If you have questions about your student’s participation, please reach out to your child’s principal.
For more information on English language proficiency assessments and the MDE Parent/Guardian Participation Guide and Refusal form, please go to:
ACCESS Family Test Information website: spps.org/about/departments/research-evaluation-assessment/test-coordination/access-family-information
MDE Family Testing Information website: education.mn.gov/MDE/fam/tests/
At Harding, the ACCESS test will start on February 3rd.
Please reach out to Micah Zielske, micah.zielske@spps.org if you have any questions.
ACT Test
The ACT test will be online this year and take place over a couple of days. Students will be assigned to a testing day between March 11-17. This year there are 4 multiple choice timed sections for the ACT; English, math, reading, and science. We are not offering the writing portion of the test. If you are in 11th and would like to take the ACT please use the link to sign up.
If you have questions please reach out to Micah Zielske, micah.zielske@spps.org
Bilingual SEALS test: Do you know a language besides English?
Knight Crew Updates
Over the break Knight Crew was able to get together and enjoy the time with one another. From cooking breakfast, swimming, fun activities, and lunch. It's not often that Knight Crew gets a time to celebrate their hard work together. A cold Thursday turned warm with the touch of everyone's collaboration.
Prior to the break, Knight Crew members were out shoveling snow for the neighborhood. A friendly neighbor was touched by the nice gesture of what the students had to offer and were in tears of joy. If there's snow, Knight Crew will be out shoveling to knock out some service hours and to put a smile on people's face.
