CHPS Names Jason Kuhlman, Valley View Principal as 2024-25 Employee of the Year
Columbia Heights Public Schools is excited to announce that our CHPS Employee of the Year for 2024-2025 is Jason Kuhlman, our Valley View Elementary Principal!
After school on Tuesday, Valley View staff, district administration, and other Hylanders from around the district got together to surprise Jason with the announcement and celebrate him being named Employee of the Year.
Jason has been with CHPS since 2019, when he was hired to take on the principal role at Valley View! Staff at his school have described him as a true leader, a caring individual, an understanding boss, a tireless advocate for students and staff and, to quote a teacher who has been in the district since 2001, "He is, hands down, the very best principal that I have ever worked under." Jason truly embodies the CHPS mission of creating worlds of opportunity for each and every learner.
CHPS is so thankful to have him as a part of our Hylander family. Congratulations Jason! Very well deserved!

May 19-23 is School Garden Week!
Columbia Heights Public Schools celebrates the first ever School Garden Week proclamation for Minnesota!
We established Blooming Heights School Garden (the only district-wide school garden in MN!) in 2010 with state funding through the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) and we also helped to establish the Minnesota School Garden Coalition that continues to put on state-wide conferences to expand the school garden movement!
We are proud of the work of our district-wide Agriculture Specialist, Melissa Trent, who connects Blooming Heights to students and curriculum from early childhood through high school and beyond! We like to say that "Blooming Heights is the classroom with the most beautiful ceiling!" Happy School Garden Week!
CHPS 2025 Powwow - Saturday, May 31st
Saturday, May 31st, will be the CHPS 11th Annual Community Powwow to honor our students! The doors for this free event will open at 3:00 p.m. and go until 8:00 p.m. in the CHHS Main Gym. Grand Entry will be at 3:00 p.m., and Trickster Tacos will be available starting at 5:00 p.m. (free for the first 300 people).

Clases Para Padres Graduation
Last night, CHPS help a graduation for our “Clases Para Padres” students. This was a class run by CHPS Cultural Liaison Leueen Saavedra and her husband Orlando Rodriguez. This class teaches Spanish-Speaking parents about the American education system, along with lessons on how to prepare their children for their futures, learn what resources are available from the school and the community, and tips on how to handle their money and time-management. The class finished with a graduation celebration for the 39 people who completed the class. Superintendent Zena Stenvik and Assistant Superintendent Bondo Nyembwe attended to speak with the participants and their families about this class and how grateful we are to have such a diverse school community with active and involved families.
