King Philip Regional High School
Week of December 1, 2024

November 15, 2024
Principal's Message
Greetings KP Community,
My Monday Memo to the faculty this week was a lot of fun to write because there is so much to celebrate at KPRHS! I am sharing the opening paragraph from the Monday memo with everyone to highlight some of the wonderful activities at the school:
Last week felt like a month's worth of activities in 5 short days!! Thank you to our wonderful students Nora Garland and Ella McManus who helped present an Intro to AI at the Faculty Meeting and Jason Silva and Taliah Westbrook who helped present the School Improvement Plan during the School Committee meeting on Monday night. The School Improvement Plan/ School Goals for 2024-2025 were unanimously approved. Congrats to Sean Connelly and Nick Glabicky for a fantastic and competitive Green & Gold Unified Basketball Game! The students did a great job and we all appreciated our refs for the game, Gary Brown and Dr. Rich Drolet. All educators in the building participated in the PD Day on Tuesday and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. It was wonderful to see educators from all 4 districts sharing best practices and learning from each other during the breakout sessions. A huge congratulations to all members of band and chorus, and to Michael Keough & Josh Wolloff, for a phenomenal Prism Concert. The talent of our students is truly impressive and I know the elementary and middle school students enjoyed the encore performance during the day on Friday. And finally, thank you to the many student trainers and to Erin Monnell for the incredibly important work of the Bystander Intervention Trainers. Erin and the students trained almost the entire 9th grade class over the course of two days. This is exciting for our school because we are actively teaching our students a variety of ways they can intervene when bullying/harassment is taking place and they were provided with consistent language to better assess their interactions with others.
Have a wonderful weekend,

KP Cares Giving Tree
Celebrate 10 Years of Giving with the KP Cares Giving Tree!
This holiday season marks the 10th anniversary of the KP Cares Giving Tree, a cherished tradition of supporting local families by providing gifts for their children. We invite you to join us in spreading holiday cheer! Here’s how you can help:
How to Participate
Option 1: Choose a Tag from the Giving Tree
Students can visit the High School Library starting November 18, 2024, and select one or more paper ornaments from the Giving Tree.
Each ornament represents a specific gift request from a local child.
Once you select an ornament:
Write your name and phone number next to the ornament number on the clipboard OR scan the QR code on the back of the ornament to complete the online form.
This process helps us track all gift requests and ensures every tag is accounted for.
Option 2: Can’t Make It to the Library? No Problem!
Email us at kpcares@kingphilip.org or rowec@kingphilip.org and we’ll select a tag for you. Please include:
Your name.
Your budget or approximate amount you’d like to spend.
The type of item you’d like to purchase (e.g., clothing, toys, gift cards).
The age range of the recipient you’d like to buy for.
We’ll do our best to match your preferences to a tag. If no exact match is available, we’ll email you with alternative options.
Important Dates
All gifts must be returned UNWRAPPED to the high school by December 10, 2024.
Thank you for helping us make this holiday season brighter for our local families!

Level Changes
Academic level change requests occur during the first two weeks of a course or with administrative approval. It is important that students spend sufficient time in a course before an academic level change is requested so that they and the teacher have the opportunity to determine the appropriateness of the placement.
Any level change that occurs after the first two weeks of the beginning of the course will require an Academic Level Change Request Form. Academic Level Change Request Forms are available in the School Counseling Office and require the student to get the signature of the current teacher and a parent/guardian.
Moving up a level only occurs within the first term. Any exceptions require administrative approval.
All courses dropped after the add/drop period will result in the appearance of a Withdrawal “WP” or “WF” on the student’s transcript. No schedule changes will take place during the last three weeks of a term.
Getting your permit?
If you need residency documentation to obtain your Learner’s Permit or Driver’s License, the Massachusetts RMV requires the following items:
An Official Transcript
A Letter of Residency (which includes student’s DOB and current residential address)
- To have these items prepared, please complete a Transcript Request Form, check off the RVM box, and submit it to the Guidance Office secretary, Mrs. Ludwig or email it to ludwigm@kingphilip.org

Ninth Grade SBIRT Screening - Week of December 2nd 2024
SBIRT health screenings for 9th grade students will be conducted through History classes on Monday 12/2/24 and Tuesday 12/3/24 (with the possibility of 12/4/24 if needed) in the Health office.
Dear Parent/Guardian,
In response to the increase in drug and opioid use in Massachusetts, Governor Charlie Baker signed into law “An Act relative to substance use, treatment, education and prevention” (H. No. 4056). Among its many components, this law mandates that school districts annually conduct verbal substance abuse screenings in two grade levels.
In compliance with this law and in order to help prevent students from starting to use substances, or intervene with early use, our office will be conducting an interview-based screening for 9th grade students around the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. This screening will follow the SBIRT protocol (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) developed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and will utilize the CRAFFT screening tool, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Committee on Substance Abuse. Student screening sessions will be brief (approximately five minutes) and conducted confidentially and in private by the school nurse or a school counselor who has been specially trained to conduct the screening. Healthy life choices will be reinforced by the screener. The screener will provide brief feedback to any student who reports using substances, or is at risk for future substance use. If needed, the student will be referred to our adjustment counselor or social worker for further evaluation. Results of the screening will not be included in your student’s school record.
As with any school screening, you have the right to opt your student out of this screening. If you wish to do so, please utilize the SBIRT Opt-Out Form to indicate that you do not want your student screened. Additionally, screening is voluntary and students may choose not to answer any or all the screening questions. If you have specific questions about the screening, please contact King Philip High School Nurses at hsnurses@kingphilip.org
Sincerely,
Nurse Tara Esposito and Nurse Charrel Liberatore
Nurse's News:
Parents/guardians - Please be aware that if your child feels ill while at school- please encourage them to visit the nurse's office for evaluation. If we deem it medically necessary, you will be contacted and we will excuse the dismissal. If a student dismisses themselves without being seen by the nurses, their dismissal cannot be excused ( without a doctor's note).
Please keep your students home if they are ill. This includes: fever (greater than 100 degrees and your child may return to school only after their temperature has been consistently below 100 degrees, by mouth, for a minimum of 24 hours), vomiting (even once) and diarrhea.
WE do not carry OR provide cold/cough medicine. We do not carry OR provide Claritin or Allegra
( allergy medicine). The Benadryl we have in the office is for anaphylactic events .
Cold and Flu season is upon us. Keeping a sick child home will help prevent the spread of illness.
