Welcome Mr. Matt Pittinato
After 33 years of dedication, serving 26 years with Lake Shore both as a 2nd grade teacher and Principal at Violet, Ms. Joan Grassi has announced her retirement at the end of this school year. We wish her a rested, relaxed, refreshed, and renewed retirement filled with happiness. Joan has been trusted colleague and fierce advocate for children for many years and her impact will carry on for years to come.
The challenge of replacing a caring, dedicated, and passionate leader Like Ms. Joan Grassi is never an easy one. After a long and extensive process to find a leader befitting of the tremendous staff, students, and community of Violet Elementary, Lake Shore Public Schools is proud to welcome Matt Pittinato as our new Principal at Violet Elementary beginning for the 2024-2025 school year.
A veteran educator with over 14 years of experience, Mr. Pittinato returns to Lake Shore Public Schools where he began his career as a student-teacher at Violet Elementary and served as a teacher at Rodgers Elementary. He has spent the past 6 years as Principal of MIchigamme Elementary in Port Huron Schools. Matt comes highly regarded and recommended having led initiatives that increased student achievement and improved the culture and climate of his school community. His caring, approachable, and calming presence are only matched by his collaborative, innovative, and enthusiastic approach to instructional leadership.
His personal mission is simple: To establish an environment of belonging where it is safe for students to risks. His background as both a former teacher and coach and current Principal will help him accomplish this goal.
Mr. Pittinato decided to pursue a degree in education through his positive experiences as a struggling learner in school. He was provided a safe space, felt celebrated for his big and small wins, built trusting relationships, made mistakes that were used as learning opportunities, and smiled often.
Mr. Pittinato graduated from Wayne State University in 2010 with a Bachelors in Science degree with a major in Kinesiology and a minor in Health Education. He also earned a Masters degree in Educational Leadership from Madonna University in 2013. He is an active leader in the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association and a Galileo Institute for Teacher Leadership graduate.
His innate ability to contribute to creating a positive school climate by helping his team feel empowered and supported makes him the perfect person to lead Violet Elementary.

Grease, the Musical
An eight-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals, along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world's most popular musicals. Save the date for Lake Shore High School's production of Grease taking place May 16-18th!
Purchase your tickets for $12 online ($15 at the door) here.
Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'," "It's Raining on Prom Night," "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.

Under the guiding principles of our districtwide initiative, the Positivity Project, the #PositivityInAction mindset is our top priority. Because of our goal to inspire students to build positive relationships and become their best selves, we invite you to follow this Positivity Project Calendar. PURPOSE
People with the character strength of purpose have beliefs about the meaning of life and their life’s purpose. They seek to be part of something greater than themselves.
Our entire Shorian Nation staff pitched in to write a combined total of 600+ postcards to Seniors who have made a significant impact on them from Lake Shore High School and North Lake High School. We appreciate our students, past and present, more than they could possibly know, and this is one small way of sharing this message.
We encourage our Seniors to visit the Commons at Lake Shore High School and hallway at North Lake High School to read these handwritten words of affirmations wall. All postcards will be given to our Seniors by the end of the year as a keepsake.
Every Senior has at least one, written by their favorite staff member from Lake Shore High School, North Lake High School, Kennedy Middle School, Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, or Violet Elementary.
A special thank you to secretary Kim Robertjohn for collecting and organizing the postcards and Mr. Carney's Senior Leadership class for hanging them.
From all of us inside the Shorian Nation, we believe in you and your purpose in life. After all, our educational purpose is driven by these relationships.
APPRECIATION OF BEAUTY & EXCELLENCE
People with the character strength of appreciation of beauty and excellence notice and value the world’s beauty and people’s skills. They don’t take things for granted.
Thank you Val Harvey, Dawn Sexton, Colleen Martel, Don McGarvah, Doug Domzal, Mary Caputo, Kathryn Lentini, Dave Gill, Jerry Buckman, Judi Hill, Fran Buckman, Joan Thomas, and Tami Kreger and Bus Aids Sheila Domzal, Ruth Stargel and Diane Barkley for ensuring the safe transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities!
At Lake Shore, we pride ourselves in our yellow transportation system. Our 10 bus drivers transport to Rodgers Elementary, Masonic Heights Elementary, and Kennedy Middle School as well as all Athletic events during the school year. They are personable and dedicated to ensuring safety for everyone aboard. According to Transportation Coordinator Val Harvey, we have accumulated over 62,000 miles since September and will complete over 112 field trip routes, with the furthest being Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio or The Pinery in Canada.
With a combined 200 years of service and an average 16 years of service, please congratulate our Transportation Department for having all 12 buses meet all safety points and receive a green tag from the Michigan State Police.
Congratulations Class of 2024 from our Director of Maintenance and Operations Wayne Satterfield, Transportation Coordinator Val Harvey, and on behalf of everyone from our Lake Shore Transportation Department. Senior Intergenerational Interviews
Field trips provide authentic, hands-on experiential learning opportunities where students can connect what they are learning in the classroom in a real world context.
Lake Shore High School students visited American House, formally known as Lakeshore Senior Living, to ask senior citizens for life advice and interview about their adolescence. We’re a fan of this partnership!
Rachel Smith, Life Enrichment Coordinator, collaborated Mrs. Welsh's AP Psychology class to create an intergenerational activity that would benefit everyone. Rachel explained, "These conversations are the best thing for our Seniors. I always enjoy watching them bridge the gap, imparting wisdom from both old and new."
Lake Shore Seniors Olli Waldecker and Briana Koontz interviewed Joe and Rona. Their advice was simple: Stay married and stay in school. Olli wrote, "This field trip was extremely fun and meeting with our elderly partners was enlightening. Getting to know their past and how life was when they were teens was great as we are learning about the human brain as we develop and grow older in our AP Psych class."
Seniors Roland Bertholet and Braydon Coursey, and Junior Jackson Sox spoke with Paula. They all claimed that it was a spectacular time and enjoyed the experience of talking to an older (and perhaps wiser) age group.
Enjoy these insights from the elderly on the key ingredients for a good life, and get inspired by these interviews.
Thank you for providing this enrichment opportunity for our students
Personification
In J. Ruth Gendler's The Book of Qualities, 70 abstract qualities come to life, walking and talking, borrowing Grandmother's shawl and telling scary stories late into the night...personification at its best! Precise, specific images reveal each abstract quality more vividly than any dictionary definition.
Students at Lake Shore High School read sample profiles from class and chose one to write about. They checked the dictionary and thesaurus and explored possible meanings and synonyms and created a sensory cluster for their quality using sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound.
Emily Biddle made every word count on this assignment. She selected Harmony and wrote, "Here, in the small town of Jingle Song. Where the Clouds hang below our houses, and birds make flips, through puffy marshmallows. Suddenly, a smell meets her nose, a smell like no other, Strawberry Jam, the smell that encourages us all to relax or calm down before a long day begins.
Julia Weiss chose Perfection as her topic. She said, "Perfection is the daughter of Judgment and Discipline, they always ensured that perfection was well-behaved and could live a life how she wanted after college."
We also felt Creativity stood out as we read the vivid words on the paper. Hailey Magasarlh wrote, "Creativity is the most colorful person you know. She is always dressed to the max, experimenting with new things everyday. She believes there is always room for color while she's bouncing around from place to place."
Senior Emily reflected, "I chose Harmony because we need more of it in the world. The world has too much hate and criticism as is. The adjective spoke to me. I am a chill, creative, full of imagination and find harmony in art and music, two passions I have. Because I have been a member of LSHS's Winter Guard for 2 years, I fully understand how important it is to be harmonious."
Thank you for your personification paragraphs; The descriptions are well-written and illustrations are so fitting!
Bonus: Junior Stewart Gibson published an article titled St. Clair River Wreck Adventure in Telescope, a quarterly journal from the Great Lakes Maritime Institute of which he is part of the Board of Directors! Approximately 5 years ago, Stewart visited Mackinaw and became, in his words, "completely obsessed with ship wrecks". Perhaps the abstract quality that best describes him would be naviphile, someone who loves ships, sailing, and water. Congratulations, Stewart, on this incredible achievement!
Innovation
Lakeshore Ukulele Strummers
The Lakeshore Ukulele Strummers visited Violet Elementary to collaborate with Mrs. Rueger-West's 4th graders. Here's where it all began.
This 22-member group practices every Wednesday for two hours, but back in 2019, they were a team of just two. Leader Sue Goeddeke shared the story of how the group formed with a simple newspaper ad inside the Sentinel requesting for anyone interested in learning how-to play or had experience playing the ukulele to join. Rueger-West participated with this group and connected the school with her program.
Strummer Virginia began playing, much like these 4th graders, when was was only 10 years old and her passion continues at 96. This is proof that the uke is a lifelong instrument that must be shared with everyone. Married couple for 58 years, Joe and Suzy Ladouceur play both the ukulele and harmonica. Making music together is a special hobby that they will cherish forever.
We watched as All-Stars worked through their nerves to play with and alongside these experienced friends to the tune of This Land is Your Land and You're My Sunshine. These intergenerational musicians were extremely talented and enjoyed every moment of this collaboration.
Thank you Music Teacher Kim Rueger-West and her co-worker Bernadette Wischmeyer for writing a grant proposal to the Lake Shore Foundation to secure ukuleles, provided by Ardis Music, for all three elementary buildings and benefit over 500 students.
The Lakeshore Ukulele Strummers will perform again on Monday, July 29th at 7pm at Wahby Park.
Guest Speakers in Schools
Motivational and guest speakers in schools expose students to real world experiences from people who are in unique career fields or life circumstances, and are the link students make between what they learn in the textbook and information shared from an expert.
Brothers Brent and Brandon Mata are cinematographers, directors, and producers who visited Mrs. Blaszkowski's Media Productions students to share their own experiences and learn about her students. They talked about their favorite parts of the editing process, passion for filming and the organization of the details, the importance of storytelling and post-production, and the marriage of filming and editing as a unit. They realized that it takes a significant amount of craftsmanship and patience to create a quality end-product, but that it is worth it.
And it is definitely worth it as Lake Shore became State Champions in Television Production at SkillsUSA earning 1st (Abigale Smith and Ashley Cercy) and 3rd place (Abigail Finazzo and Aubrey Cercy) finishes. Abigale, Ashley, Abigail, and Aubrey along with Emily Tolcer and Emily Koniecki created a 1-minute commercial for the Grand Rapids Public Museum! Here are the links to their videos:
Even more exciting, Abigale Smith and Ashley Cercy are headed to the SkillsUSA National Competition in Atlanta in June to represent Lake Shore and the Michigan SkillsUSA chapter.
Abigail was in complete shock that she placed. She said, "Last year was our first year participating and no one made the stage." This year she felt great about her end-product." She continued, "The museum was an inspiring location because we were able to learn, while filming, about different artifacts and cultures and how they related back to Grand Rapids. It was so cool!"
Most recently, she worked with a few 3rd graders from Violet Elementary to create a clever introduction for our Senior video. Thank you, All-Stars, for your assistance!
Lisa Wheeler, author of books for young children, introduced our K-2 kids from Masonic Heights, Rodgers, and Violet to several aspects of writing life. They learned what three things every story in the world needs. With the help of a puppet, they experienced why Lisa became a writer. The program for the 2nd graders included the reading of Mammoths on the Move.
Students joined a pack of woolly mammoths as they trek south for the winter, braving fierce storms, deadly predators, and raging rivers while making their slow journey across the gorgeous unspoiled lands of this continent until finally they reach their goal. Wheeler used a Mammoth puppet named Fiction to introduce readers to one of the most awesome beasts to ever walk the earth: the massive, hairy--legendary--wonderful woolly mammoth!

Schools to Tools
"Schools to Tools," an extension of the MI Union Carpenters And Millwrights Skilled Training Center, visited Lake Shore High School to provide students with a mobile field trip.
The Schools To Tools Mobile Field Trip was designed to expose and highlight the career opportunities that are available, beginning with an apprenticeship in union skilled trades. Students experienced fun, hands-on activities both inside and outside the trailer that demonstrated some of the skills learned through apprenticeships.
A leveling challenge was hosted by one of our Millwright members, who explained why, when, and where precision machinist levels are used before students attempted to level a surface themselves. The nail-driving and screw-gun challenges were a favorite of students. A wall framing challenge required basic print reading and assembly skills similar to that of framing the wall of a house. Inside the trailer seven augmented reality stations gave full details on how carpenters are involved from foundation to finish on many constructions sites and gave detailed explanations of the project’s millwrights work on. Two virtual reality stations took users to some of the most impressive jobsites in our great state, including: the Gordie Howe International Bridge, Soo Locks, and Little Caesars Arena. A virtual welding station and testimonials from our apprentices rounded out the interior stations. Students had the opportunity to don a full array of personal protective equipment (PPE) and take a selfie that placed them in a 3-dimensional job-site photo.
Junior Wyatt Smith enjoyed everything about his visits to multiple indoor stations and the trailer, but his favorite was the nail-driving competition. He explained, "I won both times that I competed!" The reason for the dubs is because he has the Building Trades class as part of his schedule. He continued, "The class has helped me with these skills. I plan on becoming a mechanic or welder in the future. I really like the trades."
Schools to Tools is another example of the great things that our College Adviser Mrs. Tanski organizes to benefit our entire LSHS student body.
Bonus: Michigan Aid sent North Lake High School's graduating students t-shirts promoting Michigan Student Aid and College and Career Planning.

Celebration
We celebrated our Family Tree with Bring Your Child to Work Day. The memories we make with our families is everything. We observed our kids' curiosity spark as they were encouraged to actively participate in learning activities. They met new friends and were impressed by their kindness and intelligence, and overall helpful demeanors.
For 8 years Principal Ms. Grassi brought her nieces Allie (15) and Haddie (12) and nephew Ben (9) with her at Violet Elementary. It has been a wonderful tradition for this family. Mrs. Fowler's daughter Maya ( joined her. She said, "Maya is a great helper and my 5th graders enjoy the interaction." We observed her playing Would You Rather? with the class.
We are always building a sense of community in the classroom and within our schools. Thank you, Shorian Nation, for welcoming our offspring into your learning spaces!
If you would like to submit a photo from Bring Your Child to Work Day event, please email social@lsps.org. In addition, we encourage you to assist us with gathering photos of "moms" and their children in preparation for our Mother's Day celebratory feature in May. Send us a photo to add to our collection!
Earth Day
In celebration of Earth Day and the upcoming Arbor Day, First grade teacher Kathy Wiseman and her husband coordinated the planting of a Norway Spruce, 6-7 foot evergreen tree at Masonic Heights Elementary by Chris Simmons, Owner of Preferred Charters (the company Masonic uses for charter bus transportation to Mackinac Island). Classes will have a chance to go outside and place an Earth Day ornament on the tree. Lake Shore Public Schools has made the commitment to support putting this tree in the ground and saying yes to a healthier world.
First grader Austin Zemens said, "I go on trash walks with my family. I just like doing the right things for the Earth!"
All 1st graders created Earth Day hats out of reusables and recyclables and wore their milk jugs, boxes, egg cartons, scraps of fabric, and flowers on their heads for an Earth Day parade yesterday.
We also celebrate Earth Day all year long by honoring environmental achievements.
Congratulations to Lake Shore Public Schools for encouraging students to participate in activities that are good for the environment and promote energy efficiency and savings; Your efforts earned the following LSPS buildings Macomb County Green Schools Designations for the 2023/2024 cycle:
- Masonic Heights Elementary: Green
- Violet Elementary: Evergreen
- Kennedy Middle School: Evergreen
- North Lake High School: Emerald
There are 81 Green Schools representing Macomb County this year, including 10 new or returning schools! To see the entire list, visit https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/MIMACOMB/2024/04/19/file_attachments/2852284/2023-24%20Macomb%20County%20Green%20Schools%20Designations.pdf
This year we will participate in a TRI-COUNTY GREEN SCHOOLS CELEBRATION EVENT with Oakland and Wayne counties at the Detroit Zoo!
Established in 2006, the Michigan Green Schools program is open to any K-12 public or private school in Michigan. To receive a “Green School” designation, each school must apply by submitting an appropriate application to the county/intermediate school district in which the school is located each year. The intent of the Michigan Green Schools Program is to encourage students to participate in activities which help them learn about preserving natural resources, protecting the environment, and to promote energy efficiency and savings.
To learn more, visit https://bocmacomb.org/programs/macomb-county-green-schools/.
Bonus: Enjoying the great outdoors is one of the best ways to celebrate Earth Day. Students at Masonic Heights were ecstatic to visit their new Lunar Landing playground. Prom Preparations
Every year, prom is celebrated by couples, friends, and family. During this time of celebration, Promposals have become a common and exciting tradition at Lake Shore. The unique proposals from Lake Shore students emphasize the creativity within our Shorians. LSHS Prom, themed Casino Royale, is scheduled for May 23rd, 2024 at Blossom Heath from 6:30-10pm.
Senior Lauren VanAssche built a strong friendship with Precious Lee, a MoCI student from Mr. Carney's Senior Leadership class. Precious is known throughout the building by her love of singing Motown classics. Lauren asked Precious to attend Prom with her group of friends to the tune of Celebrate! by Kool & The Gang. This is the first time a MoCI student has been invited to Prom by a Senior leader.
Working with Precious has given Lauren purpose and has prompted her plan to apply for classroom assistant positions after high school with an ultimate goal of becoming a Paraprofessional. That's cool stuff!
As part of the use of funds from the incredibly generous $50,000 donation for Prom 2024 provided by JCPenney and Johnny Wujek, Principal Bross from Lake Shore High School is presenting gift cards and raffles to any student who requested financial assistance with Prom-day preparations including wardrobe, cosmetology, and/or transportation. This building leader and her team of compassionate accomplices are certainly increasing joy at school.
Bonus: Congratulations to Aiden and Maddy for being crowned King and Queen at North Lake High School's Prom!
The Little Mermaid Jr.
We appreciate all of the hard work of our stage junkies!
Thank you to Rodgers Elementary's Drama Club for their entertaining performances of The Little Mermaid Jr.
The plot revolves around Ariel, a mermaid, falling in love with a human, Prince Eric, after she saves him from drowning. In the story, humans and mermaids are not allowed to interact with each other. Ariel visits Ursula the Sea Witch, who agrees to turn her into a human, and she must kiss Prince Eric within three days so she can belong to him forever.
Fifth grade spectator Mason Randall said, “The play is so exciting! Sebastian, the crab, wore such a cool costume!”
Mrs. Kiefer has been running the Drama Club at Rodgers Elementary for 8 years. All of their shows have been Disney Jr. or Disney Kids productions, officially licensed through Music Theater International, in New York City. She wrote, "Although all of our shows have been amazing, I have to say that our production of Disney's Lion King Kids was by far my favorite! The music, the African inspired music, sets, and costumes...and that sunrise over the savannah! It gives us chills! "
Mrs. Snarski serves as her Co-Director and Co-Producer. They are so blessed to have Crystal Roy as our amazing Set Designer, and Mrs. Nubia Ware and Mrs. Miranda Wiszowaty as our Backstage Managers. Mrs. Renee Atkins has also been on board this year as an Assistant Director! They also have many incredible parents who pitch in to help! They truly have an amazing team that puts on the show!
Kiefer adds, "These kids never fail to impress us! They are dedicated, driven, and so very talented! They are truly stars and they shine bright!"
A special thank you to LSHS Stage Crew member Jason Carr for running the lights, sound, moving props, and stage crafting for the last two years at Rodgers. This Senior will be dearly missed.
Bonus: The songs performed in this play will make you want to dance; We suggest that you mimic the moves from "dads" and daughters as they really cut a rug at the 5th grade girls Whimsical World of Wonders final dance at Masonic Heights Elementary.
Mary August Earns Child Development Associate
Congratulations to Senior Mary August from Lake Shore High School for earning her Child Development Associate Credential. Her plan is to attend Wayne State University in the fall.
Teens for Tots Preschool posted, "The Pankow Center's Early Childhood Education Class would like to congratulate Miss Mary for earning her Child Development Associate Credential! This credential is recognized worldwide and will allow her to teach preschool wherever she chooses. Miss Mary has worked hard to achieve this goal and we are honored to have been able to help her through this journey.
Miss Mary, we are so proud of you and are very excited to see what your future holds! We know that you will accomplish great things!"

Athletics
Athletics Website
We have built an online home for our athletic department. Our goal is to bring our athletic programs to life by sharing schedules, scores, and social media while ensuring our athletes get the promotion they deserve. Visit the Shorian Sports website for 24/7/365 access to the information you have always wanted and follow along with our sports action.
History was made on 4/23 for Kennedy Middle School with their first softball game. The girls played great and they won 13-5. They played well as a team with 8 different players hitting, 9 players scoring runs. Congratulations!
Read the Varsity Golf team's story feature titled Shorians are Having a Tee-rific Time on the Greens.
We have partnered with Kroger to help fund our athletics. Please read this letter from our Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers.
In addition, follow @ShorianSports on X for access to live sports updates from your favorite coaches and teams!
We believe a balance of academics and athletics creates a well-rounded student. Students who participate in sports not only gain the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, they also learn lessons about sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and knowing how to win and lose.
Athletes of the Week
Dante Messina
Congratulations to AOTW Dante Messina, member of the Varsity Baseball team at Lake Shore High School. Coach Osantowski shared his contributions with us:
"Dante’s pitching performance allowed to us to stay in the game and eventually in extra innings against Shrine Catholic. Dante pitched 6 innings against Shrine Catholic only allowing 3 hits, struck out 5 batters, and didn’t allow an earned run."
Megan Morell
Congratulations to AOTW Megan Morell, member of the Varsity Track and Field and Varsity Soccer teams at Lake Shore High School. Coach Phillips shared her contributions with us:
"Megan is a dual sport athlete and has been since she started at Lake Shore. Extremely dedicated to both her sports. Last week (April 17 and 19) Megan had a hat trick in her soccer game at PHN, and then on Friday was the City Champion in the pole vault and 300 meter hurdles."
