Dean's Note
For instance, at the end of the day, you may go home and announce to a friend or family member that you had a very stressful day even though the reality was that you experienced fear of failing or of losing your job . . . or you experienced frustrations because it seems that policies are too limiting to promote your innovative idea . . . or you have experienced disappointment because you were not invited to lead an initiative that you are passionate about.
Without digging down a bit to figure out what emotion was actually experienced, we continually add to our “stress,” which ends up bulging at the seams and threatens explosion. When we identify the specific emotion we are having, then we can manage that emotion more efficiently, which will open the door to developing solutions to the problem.

Mentorship Opportunity for GC1Y/GC2Y Instructors
Dr. Scott Butler and Dr. Amanda Reinke (Kennesaw State University) have published two manuscripts outlining their mixed methods assessment of the campus GC2Y initiative. The study included survey data from 354 students as well as findings from focus groups with students and interviews with faculty. Results highlight the importance of global issues education in liberal arts colleges, pedagogic strategies used by GC professors and administrative challenges in the program.
This semester Drs. Scott Butler, Jeff Turner, and Stefanie Sevick are hosting mentorship workshops for GC1Y/GC2Y instructors. See the list below of days and times.
Meetings for GC1Y Instructors
- March 31, 2:00pm, Library room 376. Workshop topic: Teaching skills and strategies for critical thinking (sample lectures by faculty)
Meetings for GC2Y Instructors
- March 31, 3:30pm in the Library room 376. Workshop topic: Assessment of the GC2Y program, what does the data tell us?
- April 21, 3:30pm in the Library room 376. Workshop topic: Examples of Global Learning in GC2Y (sample lectures by faculty)
For more information on the research conducted by Drs. Butler and Reinke see the two manuscripts below.

Public Health Student Success Story
My name is Hannah Turner, and I graduated Georgia College & State University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Health in 2019, and my Master of Science in 2020.
In November of 2022, I was given the opportunity to participate in an Oak Rodge Institute for Science and Education(ORISE) fellowship with my sponsoring facility, the Centers for Disease Control(CDC). The ORISE fellowship allows me to expand my public health knowledge while working alongside a team of highly talented individuals. I am on the Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections (DPIE) team, with our focus being mainly on new emerging infections that need immediate aid. It is a fast-paced team with responses changing based on infection impact.
When I started the fellowship position, I mainly focused on mpox and vaccination response. Prior to this, my team was mainly working on a response to COVID-19. The ever-changing nature of the fellowship will allow me to utilize different skills acquired through my time at Georgia College.
I am thankful for Georgia College and the two degrees that I attained through my time there. The learning styles, small class sizes and wonderful professors have prepared me for my future career in public health. The continued support and education I gained through my master of health promotion and human performance and my bachelor of public health have opened the doors for me to be where I am today.
I look forward to this new career and being able to utilize what I learned during school to make an impact on the health of the public. Go Bobcats!

Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) Update
The GCSU nurse-midwifery program was approved by the University System of Georgia (USG) in 2019 and is currently the only program currently accepting students in the state. In February 2020, the program was granted pre-accreditation by ACME and we graduated our first nurse-midwifery class of 2 students in May of 2022. Not surprisingly, we had a 100% pass rate with our inaugural cohort and a 100% job placement. Since then, the program has grown quickly, and we anticipate approximately ten students in our upcoming cohort.
As of the writing of this newsletter, we are anticipating our visit and will provide an update in the upcoming edition. For now, applications to this excellent program are open and can be located HERE.
