Resource of the Month
The Attendance Office
As we get back into the swing of things, we wanted to highlight the Attendance Office, located in the Main Office across from the front desk, with a few reminders about the check-in/check-out process along with submitting doctor's notes and other excuse related questions.
Tardies/Late Arrivals
Reminder that school starts at 7:40AM so students should plan to arrive before them. However, we all know that being late can happen which in that case, students should check in through the attendance office with their student ID number if they arrive after 7:40 so that they can receive their tardy pass to take to their classroom. This process also applies to any late arrivals where students do not have a doctor's note.
Excuse Days
All students have 5 Sick days and 3 Parent Request days for the entire year and it does not reset with each semester. These can be used without a doctor's or excuse note and all parents have to do is call our attendance office to let our secretaries know they would like to use one.
Check-Ins/Check-Outs
If your student is checking in late because of an appointment, all they need to do is bring the excuse note to one of our attendance secretaries and they will receive an excuse pass to class.
If your student is checking out early, parents can either call ahead or walk-in, making sure to bring an ID, and sign them out with one of our attendance secretaries. If parents call ahead, students will receive an early dismissal slip in class so that they may leave at the specified time.
Please note that due to the high volume of students, calls may not go through the first time so please leave a voicemail. Our secretaries check the voicemail frequently to ensure that all students are out in a timely manner. They appreciate your patience!
Our attendance line can be reached at (423) 232-2191.

Getting Ready for Class Registration
It's time to start thinking about selecting classes for the 2024-2025 school year!
While registration for courses does not officially open until February, now is a great opportunity to note important registration dates (found below) and look over the program of studies page to ensure a smooth registration process in the meantime.
Parents are invited to attend the Rising 10th-12th Grade Parent Meeting on February 15th at 6PM in the Auditorium hosted by our counseling department where they will be discussing information on graduation requirements, class registration, advanced programs and parent tools.
Information for Rising 9th Grade Students will be shared via a letter sent home from the middle schools on February 12th.
More information about class registration will be provided soon.
New Policy - Student IDs
As stated in the letter to parents and students on December 19, starting on January 4, 2024, Science Hill students will be required to wear a Science Hill Student ID badge each day in accordance with new school district procedures. This is an additional step to help us offer a safe and secure learning environment for our students and staff.
On January 4, 2024, we successfully distributed IDs to all students who were present during their homeroom. We will have another distribution on January 5. These IDs must be worn around their neck and visible (not tucked under clothing or in bags) at all times.
Students will also need to show their IDs to gain access to certain parts of campus such as the door by Grand Topper Hall and the back door at our CTE building. This will also apply to the powered gate on Cotty Jones, where students will be required to show their ID before the gate opens. Additionally, students will be able to sign in if they are late or tardy by scanning their ID when they check in the attendance office.
We understand this is a new procedure, but we are encouraging students to start developing a routine to ensure that they bring their ID with them each day. If a student happens to forget their ID, they will be issued a temporary ID from their first block teacher and will return the temporary ID at the end of the day to their fourth block teacher.
This policy is an additional layer that will enhance the overall safety of our campus for our students and staff. We appreciate your assistance and attention to this matter. Our Science Hill administrative team is available to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding these changes.
Attached below is the a pdf of the letter that parents and students received on December 19, 2023.
