Mariner Update Family Edition
Volume 14 Issue 12
I love our school, do you love our school!
Our gifts as educators/parents are meant to be shared and used to benefit others; essentially, the purpose of receiving a gift is to give it away to others in service and love.

Mariner Family,
As we continue this journey together, I want to highlight the vital role that connecting the heart and the mind plays in our leadership. True leadership flourishes through meaningful connections, built on a foundation of empathy, curiosity, and emotional courage.
Let’s work to create an environment where ideas flow freely, support is unwavering, and our students feel inspired to thrive. By leading with compassion and an open heart, we not only enhance our own experiences but also cultivate a vibrant community that fosters growth and joy for everyone.
Let’s continue this journey with enthusiasm, celebrating our successes and the meaningful connections we forge along the way. Together, we have the power to make a lasting impact!
Mariner Family, Stay the Course, Seas the Day, and SAIL together. As we SAIL together success will continue across the IHCS campus and in our Perris community! Keep believing. Believe in yourself, believe in our students, believe in our parents, believe in our teachers. “You Gotta Believe!” - It’s our turn.
Sincerely,
Your dedicated admin team -
Assistant Principal, Mrs. Barry, Assistant Principal, Mr. Castro, and Principal, Mr. Candelaria

Thursday Flag Ceremony: Thank you Mrs. Thielke and Mr. Humble for your outstanding leadership in leading our Friday Flag ceremonies each year. Mrs. Llausas is on stage and congratulating all of our fall sports teams, which included our 2024 championship football team. We also have an outstanding cross-country team and they are still competing this week. We will highlight the end of their 2024 season in next week’s bulletin. Our third grade team also performed a special version of Monster Mash, and their performance brought smiles to all. Following the Thursday Flag ceremony, the CAMP team led a Halloween parade. Mrs. Rodriguez, Mr. Chasteen, Mrs. Harkema and Mrs. Testa are shown on the apitheatre stage, performing and directing. Great job Mariner Family!
Veterans Day Parade: Our cheer team, band and color guard performed in the Perris Veterans Day Parade. Our students and coaches did a wonderful job, as usual, and brought home some hardware. The cheer team placed first in the cheer category and our band and color guard placed second in the band and color guard category. Go Mariners!
First Lego League Robotics Competition: IHCS competed in the First Lego League Robotics Competition at Val Verde District Office on Saturday. Our students presented their robot project, which is a robot that can function underwater. The team named the robot Proteus, after Poseidon’s son. In Greek Mythology, Poseidon is the god of the sea/oceanic bodies of water. Students presented their projects to a panel of judges, and our students did so well. Very impressed by our student presentations and responses to the panel and I am not surprised. This is our first ever robotics competition and we competed against several schools who have more experience and what did we do? We scored well enough in our first competition in the history of IHCS, to move on to the next round of competition! Go Mariners! We have the best students in the world, the best staff and best parents in the world! Thank you Coach Harkema and Mr. Castro, for bringing Lego Robotics to IHCS.
AAPAC: African American Parent Advisory Committee meeting: On Wednesday, October 30th, we had our monthly AAPAC meeting. Some parents joined us via a Zoom link and some joined us in person. Pictured are Dr. Rochelle Tawiah, Mr. Castillo, Mrs. Barry, Mr. Castro, Mrs. Bradshaw and Mrs. Hardmon. Thank you for all who participated and we are looking forward to continued collaboration, listening, learning and coming together to build up our children, our school, each other, and our community. We will continue to provide a link so that parents can participate from wherever they may be.
Professional Development: Academic Coach Markham is leading a science of reading Saturday session at IHCS. Pictured in the professional development opportunity is Ms. Multhaupt, Ms. Fraley, Ms. Aptaker, Mrs. Hutchins, and Mrs. Martinez.
What does a healthy school look like on a Saturday? At IHCS, it looks like 80 kids participating in mariachi practice from 8:00-10:00 a.m., and professional development with a group of teachers from 8:00-3:00, and our robotics team competing all day at a neighboring district, and our band, cheer team and color guard marching in city of Perris parade. 6 days a week we are showing up to develop as professionals and provide learning experiences and opportunities for our students to thrive. Nobody outworks the Mariner Family.
First graders have been working hard this year. Their love for learning really shows!
Here are some of the great things they have been working on:
In ELA, they have been focusing on sight words, short vowels, and blending and decoding CVC words. They’ve read fiction and nonfiction stories, and have focused on characters, setting, and major events in a story. They have been writing informative texts where they tell about what they know. They’ve written about jobs, school, friends, places to visit, and animals.
In Math, students have been learning how to add and subtract within 20. They’ve gotten quick and efficient with their math facts and have used many math strategies to solve problems. They have also been learning about shapes.
In Social Studies, students have learned about being a good citizen. This includes being kind, respectful, and following rules. They’ve also learned about Hispanic Heritage as well for Hispanic Heritage Month.
In Science, first grade completed an Apple Unit. Students learned all about apples. It was so fun! They have also been working hard on their Tooth Model projects for PBL to spread awareness of tooth decay.
