Weeks 6-7 (9/30 - 10/11)

What's Going on at Deal?
Student-Led Conference Sign-Up
Deal will host student-led conferences on Thursday, October 10th from 12-7pm. During conferences, students will lead a discussion with their family member(s) and their advisor. This format of conference empowers our students to reflect on their learning and development and build their communication and self-advocacy skills.
Reminders for Thursday's Conferences
Parking in the school lot will be limited - plan to arrive with enough time to navigate this and arrive at your student's classroom by your appointment time. Please note: Parking in Fort Reno Park is prohibited!
Conferences are student-led - make sure your child attends with you!
If you have not already done so, please use the sign-up website and your student's specific "entry code" to make an appointment. The online appointment system is available in English and Spanish and requires an email account. For support signing up for a conference, please contact your student's Advisor.
Immunizations due December 1st
All student immunization records are due to be updated by December 1st. If you received a letter stating your student's immunizations are not in compliance, please make sure the nurse receives their updated immunization records no later than December 1st. Please contact the school nurse with any questions or concerns.
Student Government Elections
Student Government Elections began on Wednesday, October 2. In their history class, students watched campaign videos and speeches from each of the candidates. However, due to the high number of candidates this year (which is awesome!) not every class period was able to vote after watching the campaign videos. As a solution, students were given time in class to vote on Thursday. To ensure students who were absent on Thursday and Friday still have a chance to participate, voting will stay open through the weekend. The link to the campaign videos and voting form are included below.
Save the Date - Virtual High School Night (11/21)
Deal will be hosting a virtual High School Night (HSN) Thursday, November 21, from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. This is a great opportunity to hear from DCPS application high schools. Additionally, a DCPS Enrollment team representative will speak to families about the high school application process and how to navigate through myschooldc.org. More details will be shared in team newsletters as we get closer to this event.
World Language Trip Updates
Thank you to the families and students who were able to attend last week's family interest meeting. If you were not able to attend, you can find the slides from yesterday's general session at this link.
Please note that trips are still in the approval process with DCPS. Once Deal receives final approval, links to register for the trip will be shared via team newsletters. Thank you for your patience as we make final arrangements for these trips.
On-Time Arrival
Instruction at Deal begins at 8:45 AM and ends at 3:15 PM. To ensure they have time to clear security, visit their lockers, and make it to class before the bell, students should plan to arrive at Deal no later than 8:20 AM. We appreciate your support to build good habits early in the year.

Mr. Haller - Woolloomooloo Team Lead – Math/ELA
Hello Woolloomooloo Families!
I hope everyone had a great week and is enjoying the sunshine since our two weeks of rain these past few days. Please be sure you've checked in with your scholar and their advisory teacher for our upcoming Student Lead Conferences. There are helpful documents that your scholar can use during their conference, and I encourage that families reach out if they have any questions. I know that with everyone's support, we will have a great 8th grade year!
Our incentive program "Mooloo-Mula" is in full swing! Scholars have been nothing but enthusiastic about earning tickets for their excellent behavior. Families, we ask that you continue to support out Amazon Wishlist as this really helps support our incentive program on Woolloomooloo. Thank you again for all that have donated and continued support for our team.
I hope that all those who celebrate had a happy New Year, and that everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Mr. Selph - History
This week in I&S has been focused on wrapping up the first half of Term 1 strong and bringing in some interactions between the Europeans, Native Americans and Africans in early colonial North America. We started the week with a deep dive into the Columbian Exchange, thinking about what was exchanged and brought between Europe and North America after Columbus’ arrival to North America. We then shifted gears to West Africa, exploring the rich tapestry of cultures in that area like the Asante and Dahomey and rise of leaders like Mansa Musa and Queen Nzingha. We then thought about the Triangular Trade, how it impacted Africans forced to leave their homes and work for European profit and the horrors of the slave trade. We closed the week with a look at resistance to colonization and slavery from Native Americans and Africans, going over examples like the Stono Rebellion, the efforts of Gaspar Yanga in Mexico and the Pueblo Uprising of 1680 against the Spanish. Next week is all about starting our sub-unit on the regional differences between English colonies and making our first formative: a timeline with 2 events chosen from said timeline to illustrate the conflict and cooperation between the Europeans, Africans and Native Americans!
IMPORTANT ASSIGNMENTS FROM THIS WEEK
- West African Kingdoms Nearpod – Canvas Assignment with Nearpod link (NO CODE REQUIRED, JUST NAME) for students to learn about West African Kingdoms like Asante and Dahomey
- RESISTANCE Station Walk Activity – Canvas Cloud Assignment with resources available on paper and in Canvas Modules, Unit 1 to answer questions about various moments of African and Native American resistance to slavery and colonization, due before class starts Monday 9/30 in Canvas Assignments!
Ms. Mbanwie - Science
Next week, we will complete organization of the periodic table, Isotopes, Ions and the Bohr’s model of an atom. Also, we will look at the differences between atoms, elements, compounds and molecules.

- Adopt an Element project is due on 10/03/2024 at 11:59pm.
Mr. Turchetta - English/Language Arts
Hello everyone!
This week, we completed worked on an activity called, "Drop In" Moment. This asked students to read a flash fiction story that had a vague ending. Students then analyzed the original and were tasked to continue the story to create an end that made sense as a whole. We practiced utilizing sensory and descriptive language in writing narratives to enhance their stories. To end the week, we recapped Act I of A Raisin in the Sun by completing an activity where students were broken into groups and assigned a different role that had some important aspect of the act.
Next week, we will wrap up the Act I recap activity and students will take a summative on sensory and descriptive language in writing.
Have a great weekend!
