Jackson Reed High School Course Selection - Due 3/28
As promotion gets closer, now is the time for our 8th grade students to start planning for their transition to high school. How exciting! Staff from Jackson Reed High School visited our students this week and held a virtual meeting with families to share information about the course selection process. Students should have brought home a form to select their courses.
All students are asked to discuss the attached course selection form with their families and bring the completed, signed form to their advisory teacher by March 28th. Please reach out to the Jackson Reed team or our wonderful 8th grade counselor, Ms. Travers, with any questions about this process.
Note: even if your student is considering other high school options, we ask all students to go through this process to learn about the options available to them in high school. Submitting this form helps the Jackson Reed team plan for next year, but does not lock your student in to attending Jackson Reed.
Student-Led Conferences - March 13th
Student Led Conferences will take place on March 13, 2025. This is our second conference day of the year, and our students have been working hard to prepare. Due to our first 8th grade International Trip to Costa Rica, there will be some shifts to which adults will be supporting students during conferences. Students will be supported by either their advisor, case manager or another one of their teachers. Each students' advisor and the adult supporting their conference on conference day (if different) will reach out to share instructions for how to make appointments beginning March 3rd.
Costa Rica travelers will not be present on 3/13, as they will be beginning their international adventure. If families feel strongly that they would like a Student Led Conference, they should reach out to their team teachers directly to schedule.
8th Grade Superlative Voting
This week in homerooms, 8th grade students will vote on their class superlatives! Students will receive the link in class and the results will be shared in the yearbook. Please direct any questions to your student's 1st period teacher.
World Language Trip Make-Up Work
Traveling abroad for school is an exciting opportunity, and the Deal team is honored to have so many 8th graders taking this adventure. While we consider these trips an important part of our students’ education and the absences will be excused, it is important that students keep up with the learning they will miss while they are out of the country.
To support students and families, every student traveling on an international trip will be given a personalized make-up work list based on their individual schedule. These lists will be distributed by homeroom teachers on Monday and families are encouraged to ask their students about their list. Students will have one week after the return of their trip to complete their assignments without penalty.
All content-related questions should be directed to the teacher. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments will be visible in Canvas. If your student loses their list, team teachers will have access to a digital version they can share with families.

Mr. Haller - Woolloomooloo Team Lead – Math/ELA
Hello Woolloomooloo Families!
Our team celebrated our 2nd Spirit Week this past week and enjoyed ourselves to the many talented performers at the 8th grade Deal's Got Talent Show on Friday. It is truly a highlight of the year and we'll share a link in the next few days so that parents/families can enjoy and share this amazing talent show.
The end of Term 3 is quickly approaching! It's the shortest term and it's coming to an end sooner than many people think. Please make sure that you're checking ASPEN, having those conversations with your young scholars and ensuring that they are successful moving into the last term and then finally promoting in June.

Ms. Mbanwie - Science
Hello all!
This week in science:
Students can explain the meaning of force and inertia and show how force can be used to change the motion of an object by analyzing and creating a force diagram (Newton’s first law of motion). Identify scenarios where an object is balanced and unbalanced.
Next week in science:
- Formative assessment of Newton’s first law of motion.
- Also, through experimentation, students will be able to create a relationship between the mass, acceleration and applied force on an object (Newtons second law of motion)
There will be NOT be homework for this week.
Mr. Turchetta - English/Language Arts
Hello everyone!
This week, we continued the intro unit to To Kill a Mockingbird and looked at the historical context of the book. Students read firsthand accounts of people that lived through the Great Depression and watched a video on how Jim Crow laws influenced the southern states during the time the book takes place. Both of these texts are available on Canvas. We began our writing focus for this unit, argumentative writing. Students participated in a silent debate and worked on creating claims and sound convincing arguments.
Assignments from the Week:
- Reading Plus (5) due Sunday (3/9) 11:59 pm
Past Assignments:
- End of Unit 2 Project due Friday (2/28) 11:59 pm.
Next week, we will begin reading the first 2 chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird. If students have their copies, please have them bring them to school on Monday.
***Our novel for unit 3 is To Kill a Mockingbird. If students are able, we are asking them to buy their own copy for annotations and activities. We will begin reading the book in the beginning of March. Here is an Amazon link to purchase a copy. If you are able, we would appreciate any extra copies.
Have a great weekend!
