PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora e te whanau,
As the weather turns colder, thank you to those whanau who are making sure that students have a warm uniform jacket or fleece to wear through the school day. We have a number of fleeces which we can lend to students from the office; they are washed and ready to go each day if there is a problem with the uniform. In addition, we have some soft shell blue jackets available for students from KidsCan which we will distribute. Please do not allow your student to come to school in a hoodie as they will be asked to remove it when they arrive. If you have an old unused uniform that no longer fits your child, please consider donating it to the school office so that we can help other students to stay warm and comfortable in the Trident uniform.
Many thanks this week to Staff Shaw and Mrs Farrell, who aided by Mrs Elliot, organised and held the Trident Anzac Ceremony. This was a fitting recognition from the whole school of the importance of remembering and acknowledging the debt we have to those who have served in the military in New Zealand and sacrificed themselves for our country. This is a ceremony of particular gravitas and we were so pleased with the school’s response to the event. Students were respectful and participated as appropriate - ably led by our Senior Prefect Team and our Services Academy. Teachers commented on the excellent role modelling shown by our seniors, in particular Charles Blackburn, Aria Dalgleish, Peter Heretama-Wikaire, Michele Lowe (Service Academy), Cruise Ohlson (Service Academy), Hugh Oyanagi, Izzy Steane, Nate Williams and Tahupotiki Wrathall. Our juniors are lucky to have such examples to follow.
This week it was exciting to welcome Lucas de Jong from Seven Sharp to Trident. Lucas is an old boy of Opotiki College and familiar with the Eastern Bay. He and his crew came down from Auckland to interview two young rising stars in EBOP, one of whom was Malachi Kurei from Trident, whose entrepreneurial skills in designing bespoke gumboots has brought him into the spotlight. We are proud of both Malachi’s creative vision and also his confident and personable approach to the interview - it will air next week; please take the time to watch him!
On Monday we have a Teacher Only Day during which we will be working as a full staff on developing Culturally Responsive and Relational Pedagogy. We have the benefit of Poutama Pounamu coming from Rotorua to help us with this mahi and the leadership of Matua Jimmy McLean, helped by Caroline Reddish, within the school. This is a journey that we have been on for a while now and I am proud of the developing practice of our teachers and teacher aides as they adopt and adapt to the principles of CR and RP.
Monday is a great opportunity for our senior students to sign in to their Google Classrooms and continue their mahi towards their NCEA certificates. Our Year 11 students, who have to gain 80 credits to achieve Level One NCEA this year, have a particular challenge. Please catch up with your young adult and make a plan for a worthwhile and productive day in which they manage themselves to complete outstanding work and stretch themselves to push for Merit and Excellence in their current assessments.

GIRLS FOOTBALL
Trident Blue 2nd XI played WHS 2nd XI on in a friendly warm up match.
Trident won 5 - 0.
Trident played an exceptional game considering this was the first time the girls played together and the first time some players had even played football.
Taylor Growden started the game with 2 successful goals scored within the first 15 mins. WHS dominated for a while and our back line held up to their pressure. Leona Hurley's debut at goalkeeper was a raging success with dives, kicks and running at their striker, she was a force not to be reckoned with, even saving their free kick from just outside the penalty box.
Half time came and went, another free kick was awarded, this time to Trident, sweeper Ashlee Jennings put a cracker shot away in the back of the net to put the score at 3-0.
Our two new players Bethany Prout and Bailey Law secured their positions as midfielders who never stopped running and centred the team. Vita Pilcher had a few good runs up the sideline as left wing, she was unlucky to not get a successful shot at goal. Striker Ava Milne then put two away in quick concession as puff started to run out of both teams.
A great local derby game and I'm sure there will be more to come.
RUGBY DEVELOPMENT CAMP SUCCESS
The second week of the school holidays saw Ethan Forbes and Malachi Kurei head off for 2 days to Te Puna to one of the ‘E tu Toa Development Camps’ - a Maori under 18s Rugby Development Camp - this one for the Chiefs region. Around 60 senior students from the Chiefs region were selected for the camp after applying with their player profiles and successes, plus their Iwi affiliation.
The camp saw the boys work on their Maori identity as individuals and as a group. They shared their whakapapa and connected as a group over the two days they spent together. The group walked up a local mountain, connecting with the whenua - a mountain that overlooked the wider area that connected the whole group, connected to the local wai, learnt specific knowledge through legends about the area where they were staying. Malachi says the camp was about a 70% focus on Maori culture - developing the players Maori identity as priority - teaching them who they are first and foremost before identifying as a rugby player. This aspect of the camp was unexpected but provided a space for the boys to develop and they are appreciative of their newfound understanding of how their culture can be upheld strongly in sport. For Ethan it really helped him to delve into his culture in a way he had not done before. Malachi was already quite familiar with his Maori identity but there were aspects that opened his eyes and both boys say they will go forward with a new perspective of who they are and what they want to achieve in life.
The rugby side of the camp saw the group train in two teams and then play their best in front of selectors and coaches from the NZ u18 Maori wider selector squad.
From this camp, the boys hope to get named at the end of June to get into the National Camp for the NZ u18 Maori team. Even if they don't make it to the next camp, they are stoked to have been involved in the Chiefs camp.
We applaud Ethan and Malachi on their achievement and wish them the very best as they wait to hear if they make it to the next stage.
VOLUNTEER SUPERSTAR – DEREK ESTERHUIZEN
We applaud Derek Esterhuizen for his commitment to his Surf Lifesaving volunteer work. At the Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Senior Prize-giving, Derek was recognised as having done the most hours over the season, he recorded 74 hrs, but the reality is he likely did a lot more unrecorded hours too. Derek was awarded the Best New Patroller of the year - he was awarded this for the most patrolling hours and also was awarded the best new Lifeguard candidate for the season out of 15 new recruits.
A note from Whakatane Surf Lifesaving:
“Whakatane Surf club actively put all Lifeguards & Patrol supports in NZQA 1st Aid courses (credits), plus learning skills, on the equipment - IRB's etc. Camp America love our SLSNZ Lifeguards and send us requests every year for our kids to apply....we also have a program where they can go to the UK in their summer season.”
T42 - NATIONAL PARK
We congratulate Sean Jones, Oliver Christie, Xavier Christie, Zoe Christie and Bailey Fredrickson who competed in the T42 in National Park last weekend. Sean came first in 11km trail run, Oliver came 3rd and Xavier came 7th in 24km trail run. Zoe was the 2nd female and Bailey was the 2nd male in mountain biking. They represented Whakatane and Trident superbly. Keep up the good work team!
