Rachel Ramirez Makes History in Wrestling
Rachel Ramirez continues to make history in the world of wrestling, as she competed in the state finals for the third consecutive year. This year, her achievement is particularly significant as the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) sanctioned girls' wrestling for the first time, making her the first female wrestler from Sullivan to reach the IHSAA State Finals. Ramirez not only secured her spot as a state finalist but also earned a state medal, finishing seventh in the 125-pound weight division. With a record of 33-9 for the season, she also claimed sectional and regional titles, underscoring her outstanding performance throughout the year.
To achieve her second state medal, Ramirez faced a challenging match against Knox’s Kaitlyn Snyder, winning with a close 14-10 decision that advanced her to the quarterfinals. Although she faced setbacks in subsequent matches, including a loss that sent her to the consolation bracket, she fought back to dominate in the seventh-place match against Franklin Central's Alia Russell, winning with a 19-3 technical fall. This seventh-place finish marks the second time she has ended a state meet with an all-state medal, following her freshman performance where she also placed seventh. Ramirez's resilience and dedication to the sport continue to shine through her achievements and we are so proud of her!

Lady Arrows Win Against North Central
Jacie Wilson of Sullivan High School demonstrated remarkable poise under pressure by sinking two crucial free throws with less than five seconds on the clock, leading her team to a thrilling 57-56 victory over Class 1A No. 2 North Central last Tuesday night. Wilson's performance was pivotal, especially following her impressive 14 rebounds throughout the game. The victory was supported by key contributions from teammates, including Rigley Goodman, who showcased her hustle with a crucial tie-up play, and Avari Kelley, whose late three-pointer helped secure the win.
Legacy of Love Donation Drive
Rya Hamilton, Sullivan Elementary 2nd-grade teacher, has reached out to SES families to share in a special initiative. In 2020, Mrs. Hamilton's mother proposed a project where 2nd graders could donate items to support a local agency, with the aim of helping as many people as possible. This initiative, called "Legacy of Love," was established in memory of Mrs. Hamilton's stepfather, who passed away on Valentine's Day. Mrs. Hamilton's mother was known for her generosity, frequently donating coats, shoes, socks, art supplies, clothes, and classroom supplies to SES.
Following the passing of Mrs. Hamilton's mother in October 2022, she wishes to honor her legacy by continuing this charitable effort. This year, "Legacy of Love" will expand into a school-wide project, and all families are invited to participate.
To streamline the donation process, the students have selected two local agencies to receive contributions this year. Each grade level has been assigned a specific agency for collecting donations.
Grades K-2 will be supporting the Sullivan County Humane Shelter by collecting items such as cat food, dog food, cat litter, newspapers, paper towels, bleach, and cleaning supplies. Due to the size or weight of some items, families are encouraged to drop off larger donations directly at the shelter, mentioning they are part of the "Legacy of Love" initiative.
Grades 3-5 will be gathering items for Sullivan County Brown Baggers, which provides food for students facing hunger in Sullivan County. The items needed include 100% fruit juice boxes (not pouches), fruit cups, tuna pouches, chicken pouches, granola bars, apple sauce, Pop Tarts, NutriGrain Bars, fruit snacks, peanut butter crackers (variety packs are acceptable), Vienna sausages, soups (tomato and chicken noodle), tuna and chicken salad kits, and macaroni and cheese pouches (not cups), along with other non-perishable items.
All donations collected will remain within the local community. Contributions will be accepted until February 14th, with pickups and deliveries scheduled for that day. Mrs. Hamilton expresses her gratitude to all families for their support in keeping her mother's legacy of giving alive at Sullivan Elementary.
