What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Over the weekend I read Jeneva Rose's new book called "Home is Where the Bodies Are". I am a HUGE fan of Jeneva Rose's and after reading "The Perfect Marriage," "You Shouldn't Have Come Here," "Dead Woman Crossing," and "Last Day Alive" I had huge expectations for this book. I may have overhyped myself......being a gullible reader, I still found this book to be a bit predictable. The book is rated a T for thrilling; however, I felt it lacked in some areas of the book where Jeneva Rose could have set it up to be more suspenseful, and on the edge of your seat. I still would recommend this book, because I am a fan, and it was a quick read. Check it out today and let me know what you think!
Here is what Goodreads has to say:
"After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.
While going through their parents' belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.
Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave."

"A gripping literary puzzle that unwinds the private lives of ten women as they confront tragedy in a small Massachusetts town." ~Goodreads 3.85
I loved the style of writing in this book: each character's POV is shown through one chapter. Ten local women of a small coastal town in Massachusetts are all intertwined through the death of a young woman. It showcased grief, loss, how we all cope differently, and how class sometimes determines ways in which we view the world and how the world views us. Check it out! Happy reading, friends!

Ghostwriters, politicians and fangirls, oh my! "The Busy Body" by Kemper Donovan tells the story of an aspiring novelist hired to co-write a memoir for a famous politician who recently lost the presidential election. When a superfan ends up murdered, the two join forces to solve the crime. I loved the voice of the narrator and found myself rooting for the powerhouse of a politician. It was perfectly escapist, and I loved it from start to finish. If you enjoy this author's work, check out his podcast on Agatha Christie, 'All About Agatha.'
Our library has this title in both regular and large type. Check it out today!

Stop into the library to see our new permanent display for the carved tower of books! Local artist Brian Parr carved this tower into our library's ginkgo tree following the derecho that devastated our town in July of 2011. Thank you to everyone who helped complete this project, including Mark Phippen for coating the tower, our director's husband for his time, transport and storage of the tower, our heavy lifting crew, and our library board of directors!
