Graphics Students Honored by Springboro
Students Bring Art to Utility Boxes
At the October Springboro City Council meeting, members of the WCCC Graphic Arts program, along with their instructor, Howard Norris, were recognized for their work with vinyl wraps in Springboro. The city has partnered with WCCC for three different vinyl wraps, but the two most recent ones are affixed to the traffic control boxes at the intersection of State Routes 73 and 741, and the other at Lytle Five Points and State Route 741. Students Leah Dorizas, Charlie Lehr, Kylin Price, Michael McCabe and Josh Ryan worked to incorporate things from the area into their design. The box at the intersection of 73 & 741 sits near the Springboro Performing Arts Center and the wrap design celebrates the arts, while the other showcases some of Springboro’s favorite outdoor activities like the splash pad and bike path. Congratulations to these students and Mr. Norris for a job well done!
A Night of Trunks and Treats
WCCC Students Take Part in Trunk or Treat Events
On Thursday night the WCCC SODA chapter hosted a trunk or treat event at Atrium campus. The event featured numerous staff members who volunteered to set up trunks, cornhole, a photo booth, food, and information about SODA’s mission. "The inaugural SODA Trunk or Treat was great," said Kim Banks, WCCC Pre-Nursing instructor and SODA advisor. "Our students did a great job putting the event together. We're so thankful to so many of our staff members who volunteered and the students who came out to enjoy the event." SODA's mission is to make a difference by helping them host education and registration events and lead organ, eye, and tissue donation advocacy. You can register to be a donor through their link HERE.
While SODA was set up on the Atrium Campus, students from the Fire Science program were set up at the Trunk or Treat event organized by Kirby's Auto & Truck Repair at Citygate Church, in Lebanon. The students passed out candy and gave event goers the chance to sit in one of the WCCC fire trucks.
“I love this for our students,” said Shannon Deye, WCCC Fire Science instructor. “Our students do a great job talking to the kids here and I love that we can use this as a chance to show the community some of the great things that we offer at the Career Center.”
Satellite Program Hatches Learning
Amanda Nothstine is a WCCC satellite teacher and passionate educator who is always looking for new ways to provide a spark in learning for her students. This year students in her Energy Detectives class at Springboro Junior High spent time learning about the process of hatching chickens. The students learned about how Agriculture is changing and facing many challenges forcing farmers to find innovative and efficient ways to provide food for consumers. The class took a virtual field trip to Meyer Hatchery to learn how they hatch thousands of eggs at a time and were able to watch the process in the classroom firsthand. Nothstine and her class were able to watch eggs develop and hatch in their own classroom, even live streaming it for the building to be able to check in on the progress. The class was able to watch the chicks hatch and enjoy them for about two weeks before they were taken to their new home. The students enjoyed the experience with one saying, “Getting to know the process of baby chicks was cool,” and another adding, “The chicks are so cute and Little Tim is my favorite.”
Goodwin Medical Programs Scholarship Awarded
Two Adult Education Medical Program Students Grateful
Peggy Goodwin was an adult education instructor for over 10 years and, along with her husband Mike, wanted to give back to adult education students pursuing a career in healthcare. Out of their generosity the Goodwin Medical Programs Scholarship was born and was recently awarded to two deserving students, Corrine Taylor and Amna Hameed. Corrine is currently enrolled in the Medical Assistant program and has also completed the Phlebotomy Technician program at WCCC. She’s thankful for the Career Center saying, “WCCC has helped me in so many ways. Not only with education but me as a person as well. The teachers are wonderful, and Teresa truly cares about their students. I’m so glad I chose WCCC!"
Amna is enrolled in the Dental Assisting program. Since moving to the US from Pakistan, she’s worked at a daycare but is excited to take the step towards a career in the medical field.
