Monthly Updates - May 2024
Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
"Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month takes place in the United States every May. The month celebrates the cultures and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The term AAPI includes people from all Asian countries and the areas of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia in Oceania. Many educators use AAPI Heritage Month as a time to teach their students about the contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to the United States and the world. To find out more about the contributions of AAPI individuals, see Asian Americans at a glance."
"AAPI Heritage Month began as a weeklong celebration in 1979. In that year the United States Congress declared Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week beginning on May 4. The week was celebrated every year until 1990, when Congress passed a law that expanded the week to a month. In 1992 Congress officially designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen because the first Japanese immigrant entered the United States on May 7, 1843. Also, on May 10, 1869, the transcontinental railroad, which was built mostly by Chinese immigrants, was completed."
Check out this complilation of books, stories, and music focused on celebrating the outstanding accomplishments of Asian American and Pacific Islanders throughout history: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1EkzuLc-aXaV1qtTP-A549I_epXJWwZE9-6Mu55D5ID4/edit?usp=sharing

Grades 3-5 CAASPP Testing
Colts will ROCK the CAASPP Test!
Each spring, scholars in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).
This year, your child will take the following test(s), depending on his or her grade level:
- CAASPP: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy and mathematics (grades 3-8 and grade 11)
- CAASPP: California Science Test (grades 5, 8, and once in high school)
- CAASPP: California Spanish Assessment (CSA โ 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade DLI scholars only)
- Physical Fitness Test (grades 5, 7, and 9)
Triple Crown Elementaryโs testing window for all CAASPP:
Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments is April 29th โ May 17th.
The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what your child knows and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow scholars to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.
Scholars will have the opportunity to earn rewards for their attendance, effort, and bringing charged chromebooks during testing. If scholars demonstrate good effort and bring their chromebook fully charged everyday of testing, they will be invited to the BMX Assembly on May 20th. In addition, scholars will receive raffle tickets for attendance, effort, and charged chromebooks everyday. At the end of every testing day, tickets will be pulled for prizes. Our goal is to reward our scholars for their hard work and responsibility.
To learn more about either the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments, the CAST, or the Physical Fitness Test go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp
You can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html.
For information on specific dates and times when your child will take the test in each subject, please contact Mrs. Stahley at lstahley@valverde.edu or 951-490-0440.
