2023 Institutes in Review...
In partnership with CCTE, the PBL Institute hosted 67 educators in June and August 2023. This resulted in 24 interdisciplinary projects to be launched in 11 middle and high schools across San Diego. A special warm welcome to new schools who joined us this year - LMEC & De Portola!

Project Inspiration
Hoover High students recognized in NPR podcast challenge
“Why Are You So Distracted?” is a student-produced podcast that was a part of Hoover AOIT's 11th grade project-based learning, led by teachers Ellen Towers and Lorena Gastelum. It was awarded honorable mention in the 5th annual NPR Student Podcast Challenge for its connection to mental health - specifically technology addiction, the endless scroll, and why it affects many teens. Listen to the students and Towers talk about their work on KPBS Midday Edition!

PBL Foundations Micro-credential
Are you interested in deepening your PBL practice and leadership at your school and within the SDUSD network? To learn more about this and other micro-credentials, check out the course catalog.
Apply using this INTEREST FORM by September 15th.
"PBL Foundations" requires 15 hours of asynchronous learning, and is eligible to receive one Continuing Education Unit through UCSD Extension ($55 w/ $17 fee for transcript). For more information, visit the SDUSD Micro-credentials Website or email cmillow@sandi.net.
2023 Career Pathways Conference: Launching Toward the Future!
SDCOE’s College and Career Readiness Team is hosting the 2023 Career Pathways Conference on Thursday, October 12 from 9am - 3pm at the Marina Village Conference Center.
The conference theme is "Launching Toward the Future!" and it will focus on building a network for career technical education and career pathways teachers. Opportunities are provided to expand your network and learn from the best practices of others.

Climate Stories: Inspiring & Engaging Youth
Check out the opportunities below to learn how you can integrate climate storytelling into any grade-level and any subject area to support your climate change curriculum.
Workshop: Engaging Youth Through Climate Storytelling
When: Wednesday, October 4th, 5-7pm ET
The workshop will begin with an introduction to climate storytelling: what it is and why it matters, before grounding it within the classroom experience. Participants will then transition into a reflective writing exercise meant to get them started thinking about their climate story. The workshop will end with an invitation for participants to share their own experiences talking about climate change, and walk away with some practical resources and next steps for bringing climate storytelling to their students. New Project: Inspiring Stories
When: Ongoing, October 2023 – May 2024
Inspiring Stories is a collaboration between the Teach Climate Network and Talk Climate Program that engages educators through one-on-one climate storytelling coaching to build confidence in talking about climate change. Inspiring Stories will ignite hope and action, build educators’ confidence in talking about climate change, prepare educators to do storytelling work with their audiences, and showcase a diversity of educator experiences in Climate Generation’s Storytelling Collection. The Energy Coalition: Energy is Everything Internship & Curriculum
Internship: Applications due 9/15!
The Energy is Everything Internship is an opportunity for current junior and senior students. Students will engage in a number of environmental actions and build their professional network over 150 total hours of service, and includes training in ESRI ArcGIS. This is unpaid and fully remote/virtual. The next cohort begins in September 2023.
Curriculum: The Energy is Everything program is a no-cost, TK-12th grade standards-aligned educational program available throughout California that offers hands-on supplemental lessons in sustainability and energy efficiency.

Curriculum Resources to Enhance PBL
- SDUSD One-Stop-Shop for Educators: includes links to resources such as Critical Concepts, Guaranteed & Viable Curriculum, & Standards-Based Grading.
- Learning for Justice (formerly Teaching Tolerance): free K-12 resources for educators to supplement curriculum, to inform practices, and to create inclusive school communities.
- Education Amplifier: provides free artwork, lesson plans and teaching tools that help facilitate non-partisan conversations around social justice in K-12 classrooms. They also have open calls for artwork.
SDCOE Work-Based Learning Opportunities
Receive access to the San Diego County Office of Education's Work-Based Learning opportunities, as they are made available, by completing the Work-Based Learning Training (30 minutes).
After completing the training, submit the Sign In for Work-Based Learning Training Form and the SDCOE College and Career Readiness Team will add you to their email list and send you the training presentation with links to WBL resources.
