LHS IB Diploma Programme
1st Quarter Newsletter, October 2024
Dear Diploma Programme Families,
The Loveland High Diploma Programme has had a dynamic first quarter, and we are excited to share the initiatives and achievements thus far. This newsletter will provide updates on student projects, highlight key events, and show how we work together to uphold Loveland High School's mission of "Developing students to succeed in a global community."
Building a strong academic foundation and fostering inquiry and knowledge-building through student-centered methods has been the focus this first quarter. An essential part of academic success is goal setting, where students identify areas for growth and track their progress. As they dive deeper into the challenging coursework, they learn to adapt their goals, seek support from peers and teachers, and develop resilience—skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
We also introduced the IB Learner Profile Calendar to guide students in reflecting on their personal development each month. In August, we emphasized being Inquirers, encouraging students to nurture their curiosity and ask thoughtful questions. September focused on becoming Knowledgeable by exploring subjects in depth and connecting ideas across disciplines. For October, we’re highlighting what it means to be a Thinker—approaching complex problems with critical and creative thinking skills. Students build a toolkit of attributes that support academic growth and character development through these monthly themes.
Learner Profile Awards
August/Inquirer Awards
We want to know more about the world, are willing to engage in explorations that will lead to discoveries, and are eager to ask questions to help them answer those questions.
Keegan Gore
In our first unit, Keagan has asked some amazing questions in class. His curiosity about how things work and continued effort to comprehend the material exhibit the skills of an inquirer!
Sydney Brantley
A curious and inquisitive member of the Literature and Performance class!
September/Knowledgable Awards
We are students who develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.
Marely Jaquez Ruiz
Marely works to learn the content, particularly the challenging grammar concepts we have been learning this quarter. She takes great notes to impact her learning and uses those notes and practice exercises in class to demonstrate her knowledge of those grammatical skills.
Josiah Crill
Josiah works to learn the content, particularly the challenging grammar concepts we have been learning this quarter. He is always attentive in class and engages with the content by taking notes and interacting with his peers to reinforce the concepts. His efforts to become knowledgeable in English grammar are transferring to his knowledge of Spanish grammar.
Building the DP Cohort
The students enjoyed lunch, discussion and team building games at their first community gathering. One of the benefits of the DP cohort is being part of a supportive community but this must be intentionally built and maintained. Many of our alumni report that the support of their cohort was crucial to their success and enjoyment of the program. The students had a lively discussion on what it means to be a full DP students and how academic rigor has many shades of meaning. Of course the highlight of the day was the team-building session that emphasized trust and cooperation.
Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS)
Kick-off Event and Update
The CAS Programme at Loveland High School launched this year with an exciting trip to The Picklr. Students not only had a blast learning about pickleball but also got an introduction to the scoring system and game strategies. The kickoff event set the tone for an engaging and reflective year ahead.
In addition to the kickoff, our students have already been active in service work for the Loveland community. They’ve taken on roles as social media influencers (@lovelandib) to promote the Diploma Programme, showcasing the benefits of the IB curriculum and student life. They also volunteered at the Homecoming Carnival, where they successfully ran a game table, bringing joy and energy to the event. These experiences are helping students develop key skills in communication, leadership, and community engagement.
This month, students are focusing on planning their own CAS experiences and connecting them to the IB Learning Outcomes. The CAS Club activity for October is focused on the Creativity strand, and students are invited to create Multimedia Art on October 28th at LHS.
What's Happening in DP Classes
What is something important you have learned one of your DP classes so far?
Julisa Garcia Ortiz
11th Grade Full DP Student
In DP Lang Lit, I have learned how to write an essay using punctuation correctly. I never really knew how to write when using different punctuation and how to set up sentences with correct formatting. I learned how to do this, which has also helped me in my other classes.
11th-grade Full DP Student
I've learned how to think in depth. In DP History, we are taught to think like historians and understand different perspectives.
11th Grade DP History Student
Since joining the IB DP Programme, I have learned to manage my time better. The workload has been manageable, assuming I take the time I have available to get the work done, instead of procrastinating like I used to do all the time. The workload has taught me how to schedule my time to get everything done.

Diploma Exam Registration for May 2025
Students in DP Standard Level courses should register for the May 2025 session. Most classes consist of at least two exams taken on consecutive days. Portfolio work (called the Internal Assessment) is also part of their overall exam grade in the subject. Loveland HS has received funding from the district to subsidize the cost of DP exams, so the final price is $98 per exam. If a student is eligible for free or reduced lunch, the price is $20 per exam. This application determines eligibility (this link gives more information and shows the income requirements). We do not believe fees should not be a barrier; therefore, the school will work with families to ensure exam access. The process of registration is outlined below:
DP Registration (Oct 7th-Nov 15th)
Students informed about exam content, procedures, and benefits.
Students complete the pre-registration form to show interest in taking the exams (this is not an official IB registration). Students should complete this form by Nov. 10th.
DP Coordinator follows up with students to discuss exam details and issues a registration letter to parents/guardians.
Parents/guardians complete payment (or arrange a payment plan) with Michelle Ray or Coco Grassens by the deadline, Nov 15th
Students may still register after Nov 15th but will pay a nonrefundable fee of $39.
Students can withdraw from an IB exam by Jan 15th with no penalty.
What is the Diploma Core?
Full Diploma students are required to take the DP Core, which consists of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS). The Core teaches the key skills such as research, communication, and critical thinking. Any 11th-12th grade student can take TOK as an individual class. Click photo for more info.
