FJVD Weekly Info
We Live the Word!
From the Principal's Desk
Welcome to a special Sunday edition of our Weekly Info Newsletter. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at our 10th Annual Car Show and Vendor Fair yesterday! We were once again blessed with tremendous weather, and attendees enjoyed over eighty incredible cars along with great vendors, entertaining children's games, and an expansive book sale. A special thank you to all those who made this event possible including our faculty and staff volunteers, alumni volunteers, and all of you who came out to support the school yesterday!
In addition, thank you to those families who were able to join us for Coffee with the Principal this past Tuesday. We had some great discussions, and we are already working on implementing some of the changes and new programs mentioned during our time together. As a reminder, Coffee with the Principal is open to all families and is held on the second Tuesday of each month. We look forward to seeing you in October!
Lastly, we are excited to be offering a range of middle school elective courses this year, including a course titled News & Media. In this course, students explore various media forms and produce their own publications in a range of mediums including written, digital, and audio productions. Below, you'll find a newsletter publication from two 8th grade students in our News & Media class detailing middle school activities on the first day of school. Enjoy!

Building Our Community in Middle School
Article by Isabella R. and Mercy J. (Grade 8)
It was a warm, sunny day on Friday, August 30, 2024 when the middle school students and staff of FJVD school gathered on the rectory lawn and field. Here, they would engage in a number of community building activities. These activities were designed to help the students get to know each other better and to welcome new students into the community. For example, they played “Would You Rather?” for the students to get to know each other. These games were certainly enjoyed by all.
In addition, each of these activities had an underlying message that showed students tips to use in the classroom. For example, they played a game called “Shark Attack” where they were taught to never give up and try new ways to solve problems. In the first round of the game, one student tried a certain technique and failed. He quickly decided to change his tactics which eventually succeeded in meeting his goal. This taught the students an important message of learning from mistakes and always trying again. Students also played games to teach them to work together. For example, they played a game where they stood in a circle and each student held part of a rope. Together, they had to use the rope to form different shapes. This helped them learn how to work in a group. Ultimately, all of these activities helped form a better community for the entire middle school.
