Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Wow! The Shaw Stars girls’ basketball team did an outstanding job against rival Herrera Panthers. While the Panthers prevailed, the Stars played incredibly well and took 2nd place for our district league. Congratulations Coach Wilfert and girl Stars. See photos below.
It is a big week at Shaw Montessori! Tuesday, we will hold our annual science fair with a twist. The projects of the lower elementary students (1st-3rd grade) will be set for viewing in the school cafeteria. The projects of the upper elementary (4th-6th grade) will be in the gym. We hope the space makes a difference in viewability for our little scientists.
Also, on Tuesday from 9-1 our 5th and 6th grade Shaw Track Stars will be participating in our district track meet at North High School. These student athletes, under the guidance of Coach Wilfert have been practicing their events and are excited about their opportunity to compete against our sister schools.
And again, on Tuesday evening our governing board will hold one more public hearing on school closures at Dunbar Elementary School, 5:15. The governing board will then vote on the closures at the March 4th regular meeting in the governing board room at district office, 5:15. Below, I have shared the two ways to have your voice heard at our board meetings. I strongly encourage you to continue to send comments of support.
"To make a public comment, community members may request to speak in person during a meeting by completing a Request to Speak form and giving it to the Governing Board secretary prior to the start of the Board meeting. The Board president will call the names of those who request to speak. If you are unable to attend the Board meeting, you may send your communication to communityrelations@phxschools.org by 4:30 p.m. the day of the Board meeting. Please state in the subject line – Community Communication; include your name, address, and your role as a staff member, parent or community member; along with your communication in the body of the email.”
Thanks to all of you that attended workday in the garden to support Mr. Moench and our school gardeners!
All the best,
Principal Engdall

Instrumental Music Honor Festival
On Wednesday March 5th, 2025, twenty five of our students will be participating in this year district’s honor festival. It will be held at Herrera school. It is a day full of rehearsals, learning and fun for them, that ends with a concert at 5:30 PM. The whole community is invited to attend. Please, come and experience this event with your students. Congratulations to our student musicians:

Greetings!
We continued to pickle random foods this week. In previous weeks I let the students try as many pickled foods as they liked, including the brine. This led to many tummy aches and nurse Rose visits. One student had candy for breakfast and topped it off with pickles and brine. That is a recipe for indigestion if I ever heard one. Now, I am only allowing students to try a few pickled dishes and no brine shots. I encourage students to take home some dill and a recipe to try pickling at home. Only one more week of pickling!
Parent workday was this weekend! We mulched all the primary and elementary pods. There was some concern about our mulch expenses, but I can assure you that this is a top priority. These areas are heavily trafficked, and the students break down that mulch in a few years into dirt and dust. That gets kicked up by continuous traffic and is inhaled by the students, staff, and faculty at Shaw. Luckily, we have a wonderful parent body to approve such expenditures and, in addition, do the labor themselves. Thanks parents!
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, and aluminum cans. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. The front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!

PESD Public Hearings
Make Your Voice Heard – Support Our Schools!
Phoenix Elementary School District #1 is making tough decisions to protect students, staff, and the district’s future. One of their proposals is to close two schools at the end of this school year. The Board’s plan ensures long-term financial stability, retains all current staff, and strengthens educational opportunities for every child.
We need your support at public hearings to ensure these difficult decisions to protect our district's financial sustainability are supported. A strong opposition could overshadow the thoughtful planning behind these decisions – we can’t let that happen.
How You Can Help:
📢 Attend a public hearing and share your support.
📝 Sign up to speak – even a few words make a difference.
👥 Get involved – earn volunteer hours and help organize.
Our goal is to have four parents in person at each of the upcoming meetings.
Please sign up here so we can stay organized. https://signup.com/go/VEkbaxe
These decisions shape the future of our schools. Let’s stand together to ensure the best for our students!
