School Attendance Matters
School Attendance Matters
School attendance matters! It is arguably one of the most important indicators of school success. You cannot learn when you are not there to receive vital instruction. Students who attend school regularly can drastically improve their chances of being academically successful. Additionally, poor attendance creates significant learning gaps. Even if students complete the make-up work, they will not learn and retain the information as well as if they had been there. Here’s the bottom line:
· Students are more likely to succeed academically when they attend school consistently.
· Attendance can help students boost academic performance, develop a sense of commitment, build self-discipline, social skills, and overall personality development.
· Attendance can also ensure that students are safe and secure during the school day.
· Irregular attendance can even be a predictor of whether student will drop out of school before graduation.
The Adams Junior High (AJH) attendance goal for the 2024-2025 school year is 98.5%! We need your help to reach this goal and help our students maximize their learning this year. The Texas compulsory attendance law states that students must attend school daily. Below are few AJH details to know about our daily attendance:
- All students are expected to be present and ready for learning each school day.
- Our school hours are 8:55 am - 4:05 pm.
- The first tardy bell rings at 8:55 am. All students are expected to be inside the classroom and ready to learn before the tardy bell rings for each period of the day. Students who are not inside the classroom with the proper learning materials when the bell rings will be marked tardy by the teacher.
- After 5 tardies a one hour after school detention will be assigned.
- There will be incentives and rewards throughout the school year for students to have great attendance.
If your child(ren) must be absent, please follow the procedures below to avoid truancy issues:
- Full day absences - Parents will need to fill out the online absence form found on the AJH website under the Families or Our Campus tabs and look for Attendance. The online form is only for full day absences and must be submitted the day of the absence. If more than one day of absence is required than an email is recommended.
- Excuse notes - Doctor notes, parent notes, orthodontist, dentist, therapy, etc. need to be received by the Attendance Office the day your student returns or within 5 days of the absence. Excuse notes will no longer be accepted after 5 days.
- Checking out early - Parents needs to write a note to be given to the Attendance Office (include student name, reason for leaving and time of pick up). Your student will receive a green pass to go to the Attendance Office to wait to be picked up. Students should not be picked up after 3:30 pm or after 12:30 pm on early release days. Due to the volume of emails we receive daily, no early check out emails will be accepted after 9 a.m.
If you have any questions regarding attendance, please call the AJH Attendance Office at the following phone numbers:
Last Names A-L: Gina Cummings at 281-234-3420 Last Names M-Z: Joanne Pak at 281-234-3405
Thank you in advance for your help and support with your child’s regular attendance at AJH this school year!
