GLOW GAZETTE
WEEK OF JANUARY 9, 2023
Message from the Principal
GLOW Students & Families,
We hope you've had a great weekend and are looking forward to the week ahead!
Please be sure to check out all of the information in the newsletter below. Many of our after school clubs are starting back up this week. Students receive information about after school opportunities in the morning announcement video that are also posted on our website. There are many opportunities for students to get involved at GLOW!
While we have just begun 2nd Semester, it's also time to start thinking about next year. 8th-11th graders will begin registering for HS courses for the 2023-2024 school year in February. We hope you will make plans to attend our Curriculum Night on Thursday, February 2 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM to learn more about the academic opportunities for students in our high school!
We are also in our Open Enrollment Season! If you know a rising 6th-9th grade student who might be interested in GLOW, please share with them the Enrollment Application information found in this newsletter or have them contact Jennifer Wilson-Mathis, our Admissions Director.
Wishing you all a great!
Kate B. Tayloe
Principal

Gaggle - Google Monitoring System for Student Safety
Gaggle is a scanning program that reviews student Google files (Gmail and Drive) for inappropriate images and/or content identified by keywords. Gaggle will flag content referencing intentions of violence, drug and alcohol use, sex, self-harm, profanity, hate speech, pornography, etc. It will also analyze images to block pornography and obscene visuals from reaching students.
Gaggle representatives review google files throughout the day and night and send alerts to school administrators. Depending on the type of alert received, if school administrators receive an alert indicating potential student self-harm, parents/guardians will be contacted when the alert is received. If a parent/guardian cannot be reached, administrators will contact local law enforcement to request a well-check on students of alerts regarding threats of self-harm.
All school rules apply to the content on a student’s Google Drive. Students are encouraged to practice responsible digital citizenship and ensure that they are following GLOW's Acceptable Use Policy.

PBIS
What is PBIS?
PBIS helps schools create a common language around student behavior expectations and focuses on teaching expectations, preventing problems, and using logical consequences. At GLOW, we have established a common language by identifying 4 key expectations (respectful, responsible, safe, and kind) for all students. PBIS requires that we focus first on educating students about expectations and recognizing students who exhibit these behaviors (respect, responsibility, safety, and kindness).
Students have been provided instruction regarding what it means to be respectful, responsible, safe, and kind in all school environments. When we communicate with students about behavior that requires redirection, we use these 4 key words to communicate with students and re-teach expectations, as needed.
To learn more, you can find our PBIS Expectations Matrix HERE, as well as our school PBIS posters that are displayed in all settings HERE.
We encourage you to also use the language of GLOW's expectations when communicating with your student about behavior in and out of school. We believe that all behavior (appropriate an inappropriate) can be aligned with these 4 expectations.
