Kindergarten Vocal Performance
Our Kindergarten debut vocal performance was today. Our Hawthorne singers did an amazing job singing songs with accompaniment and a cappella. They performed songs in English and Spanish and used American Sign Language. They even received their first standing ovation!
First Grade Celebration of Learning
We were so excited to welcome our first grade families on May 7th for our First Grade Celebration of Learning. Students showcased their work and parents were able to see the process of student growth across the year.
Farewell First Grade Ladybugs
Did you know that a ladybug can eat 50 to 60 aphids in one day? First graders became ladybug experts as they observed the ladybug life cycle in their classrooms. After learning many interesting facts about ladybugs, it was time to release them into nature. Although we will miss having ladybugs in our classrooms, we are happy they have a new home here at HES. Be on the lookout for HES ladybugs flying outside our school.
Grandparents Tea
Students in Dr. Schoener's class hosted a Grandparents Tea this afternoon, complete with handmade corsages, picture frames and placemats. The students interviewed their grandparents and shared pictures from across the year.
A Visit with Our CES Duck Experts
Fifth graders from Columbus Elementary visited Hawthorne this afternoon to teach students about our duck eggs. Students learned about candling eggs, the hatching process, and ways to take care of the ducklings once they hatch.
Fun Run Friday
Our Fun Run is one week away. Thank you everyone for the overwhelming response. We are already more than halfway to our goal! On the day of the Fun Run we are asking all students to wear sneakers and their HES t-shirts. Our PTA will provide water and volunteers to help count laps.
One Book One School
We had a great author visit with Grace Lin. She shared that the inspiration for her book came from a poster that she illustrated. She spoke about her excitement at getting to do the jobs of an author and an illustrator. She explained the reason that she included the rabbit on every page in her book is because in Chinese culture, the rabbit who lives in the moon can grant wishes. Alice, the main character in the book, makes a wish on every page. We hope that you are enjoying reading Once Upon a Book. Please tap on the picture to hear the book read aloud by Ms. Stern and Ms. Denman.
