5/31/2024 May - End of Year (EOY) School Edition
Good Afternoon, E.M.S. Community,
It is hard to believe that the end of the year is upon us. What a great year it has been. I am so grateful for all of the hardwork that our teachers have put in to help your students be their best. I am also thankful for the hard work and dedication that your children have put into this year. The growth has been trememndous in all areas. We hope that you have had a chance to enjoy that transformation as much as we have.
"So long" for now, Dear Friends...
Sadly, We are saying "Good-bye" to three longtime faculty members here at EMS. Mrs. Glori Cayton, our 7th grade intervention specialist, is moving to Eastwood High School beginning in the fall. We will miss her around the building, but are excited that she will be working with students that she is very familiar with.
We also want to wish Mr. Randy King, our CRC Counselor a happy retirement. He has worked with many families through some of the most difficult of circumstances. He has been a strong resource for our families and community, and we wish him all the best for his well deserved retirement.
Finally, we want to wish a very Happy Retirement to Mrs. Tong. She has taught multiple subjects including ELA, Reading, and Art here at Eastwood. She was the middle school and varsity cross country coaches, and is always fun to talk to about Rock-N-Roll and her dogs. We will miss her very much. However, we are sure she will find new adventures and celebrate them to the fullest.
Best of Luck to our Eastwood Middle School friends and faculty in their new endeavors.
This summer, I want to remind you and your students that their IXL accounts are open to practice and to continue to review and prep for next year's classes. Science Gizmos are also avaialble with their school logins. It is a a good idea to maintain their skills, and also challenge those that are looking to be challenged. Thirty to forty minutes a day is a positive time killer that will reap benefits in the fall. A good routine of getting out of bed and getting it going can really start the day off right. I also encourage the library summer reading programs, and any active camps that can keep kids engaged and utilizing these important skills.
New this Summer:
I am going to get the Mr. Fertig YouTube Channel up and running again. This way I can send out messages and videos to touch base with kids and families, while having a little fun. Please share these with your students. I will use Final Forms, and their school gmail addresses to send out links. My goal is to keep in touch, remind them of things they can do over the summer to stay up on school skills, and finally to review the EAGLE WAY at all times.
Here is the link with past videos from COVID and beyond.

Finally, we would like to wish all families a happy and restful summer break. Even if you do not get the chance for big trips and fancy destinations, take the time for the little things. Board games, cards, fire-pits, and hotdog bbq's can make the same memories and spark the same emotions that bring families together and help kids to grow as people. Remember, if you do not keep kids busy and engaged, they will find something, and you're not controling what that might be. (It might not be good)
Have a great Summer, and thank you for a great school year.

If you have medications in the office, please pick up by June 14
Dear Parents of a 6th Grade Student:
Students who are entering 7th grade are required to receive the immunization Tdap, Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine, and all other age appropriate vaccines.
This immunization must be received prior to the start of the 2024-2025 school-year. As with other school immunizations requirements, Section 3313.671 of the Ohio revised Code states that students who do not provide documentation of this immunization are subject to exclusion from school.
I strongly urge you to call your healthcare provider as soon as possible and get your child vaccinated.
The physician’s offices and shot clinics get very busy in the summer and at the beginning of a new school year. I recommend that you have your child vaccinated before the end of this school year in order to avoid the “summer rush” and the “back to school” avalanche and possibility of exclusion at the beginning of next school year!
Any documentation showing proof of vaccination can be mailed to the address below or emailed to dsutton@eastwoodschools.org before August 21, 2024.

EMS Athletics News and Notes
The last contest of the year, the Junior High/Middle School track league meet, was held on Friday, May 10th at Rossford. The girls track team won the NBC championship! Macy Shoemaker won the High Jump. Karissa Nelson won the 100 and 200 Hurdles. Lauren Schuerman won the 100 and 200 Dash. The girls 4 x 200 team of Gabby Provo, Ava Majzun, Lexie Lewis, and Macy Shoemaker also won. The boys track team took 3rd at the NBC Championships. Brayden Luidhardt won the 110 and 200 Hurdles. He also won the High Jump. Everett Ward won the Pole Vault. It was a great season for both teams. The next day, Brayden Luidhart participated in the OHSAA Middle School track championships and placed 10th in the 110 Hurdles and broke the school record with a time of 15.90. Other school records broken this year include the girls 4 x 200m relay, and Karissa Nelson in the 100 hurdles. At the end of May the athletic department acknowledged the athletes who also get the job done in the classroom. Our Scholar-Athletes receive a Tshirt for their first year of maintaining a 3.5 GPA every quarter throughout the year, and a medal for 2nd year recipients.
